Yup, got a 12 year old that's the same...

Shoes and "brand named" apparel is all he'll wear outside of the house. It's very tough to justify the costs of these shoes when you know he could outgrow them in four months. But he wants either Nike pg 1 -145's or Curry 4's gold & white, over getting a cell phone. ...So $180.00 later (eyes roll). ...I just hope the men's size 10 will last 'til mid summer (only 12, so anything can happen). And when he get's them, he's gotta promise us that they'll be only used for gym until school is done. (He's says that he desperately needs them for basketball in January) And it doesn't just stop with the shoes... $25.00 sport-socks, basketball shirt and shorts. Sometimes I think it's best if we just get him Footlocker and/or Sport Check gift cards and let him pick what he wants. But, he says the Brandon stores are crap for inventory. LOL ...So, on line we went. I just hope they fit like the ones he tried out in Winnipeg.
I have to admit that I was taken back with all the materialistic attitude on pricey brand names with the boys. How is this becoming "the thing"? Boys that age usually didn't care. But, I guess someone in the school or some sort of age targeted promotional advertisements are filling their heads with this "must have" crap. Now, he can't accept anything less or the other boys will "call him out" on having "cheap knock-offs" or the wrong type of shoe. How did fashion take over (pre-)teen boys lives? For as long as I remember it was T-shirts that defines you torso, a broken-in pair of jeans that presents your bum and well managed hair to impress your fellow peers (mostly female). Now it's all these certain overpriced sports clothing sitting over the silky, brightly colored, $40.00 stripper-underwear that "cradles/comforts" his package to impress his buddies. Really, the other guys??? ...for most of you, boys, that's not the target group to be impressing. *Hint* --It's supposed to be the girls you need to be getting their attention. LOL. Although, the fancy gotch is cool... I'm not buying a weeks worth just for him to strut around like a fashion show model in the change room in front of his friends. For game day? ...Yeah, okay, if it's helping. But, not for everyday.
I've already "caved" with the shoes for him because that's what he really wants, so ...fine. But, my advise to any other parent with this shoe fetish problem... Make sure you get the right one, by getting the brand name and model directly from your son mouth. Or he'll be disappointed.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
