Fresh off of one of the most dramatic games you'll ever see at Westman Place, the Wheat Kings must now re-focus for what will be the biggest game of many of their lives.
The Wheat Kings have not played in the Memorial Cup final in at least my lifetime and will be trying to go one step further than the famed 78-79 team went at the 1979 Memorial Cup. That Wheat King team of course lost in overtime to Ontario's Peterborough Petes in the final. A win on Sunday would give Brandon its first ever Memorial Cup title and send this city into a frenzy.
Despite their at-times dominant effort against Calgary in the semi-final, Brandon would still have to be considered the underdog in this game against the 3-0 defending champion Spitfires. One of those three Windsor wins was of course the 9-3 game that opened the tournament last Friday. If the semi-final was any indication, the Wheat Kings are a much different team than they were in the first game against Windsor and stand a chance of pulling off the "upset" if they have all lines going and get timely goaltending.
One question mark coming into this game will be how Windsor bounces back from a bit of a layoff. They haven't played since Tuesday and haven't played a meaningful game in almost a week (Monday).
Be sure to once again wear yellow to the game and bring the same yellow towels that have become a staple at Wheat King games in this tournament.
Now's your chance to break down the matchup and predict how the game will play out. What do the Wheat Kings have to do right against the defending Cup champs in order to earn the right to carry the Memorial Cup around the Westman Place ice on Sunday night?
On game day, I'll as always post any details about lineup changes about an hour before game time.
I'll also post links to as many previews/press in the days and hours leading up to the game. Feel free to post any of interest that you come across as well!
