We lost one of our apple trees this year, and are looking to replace it. Our other tree is a dwarf Dexter Jackson, and we’ve had good luck with it. But the smaller tree we had only had for 5 years or so, and it never really took off. I think it may have been a Goodland. We south of Brandon, so I’m wondering if it is a zone 3 and we are a 2??  
But I’m looking to get something new now. My DJ ripens in August, and is starting to flower now. I want something that will be compatible with the DJ in terms of flowering, so I can get the cross pollination. What have you guys had success with? We eat some fresh, make pies, jams and freeze.

We have a Goodlands tree which is 25+ years old. It produces lots of amazingly delicious apples! I’ll attach A picture of it flowering now.

I know someone up by the park that has a goodland and it is many years old. I doubt it is a problem with zone.  
 
If it never did well (I am assuming you mean the tree itself, not apple load), many things could have been factors...how it was planted, waterered initially, strength of the root, pests, maybe it didn't have the same access to ground water as the other, etc. Maybe it was just a weak tree?  
 
If you don't want to try a goodland again, I would try Norland. It is hardy & would work well for all the uses you stated.
