Trees and shrubs under environmental stress will drop leaves early and produce many more seeds as usual when they lack moisture.
Many common varieties will do this during a period of severe drought. During an unusually hot and dry summer, leaves tend to drop much earlier than usual, produce more seeds and may be more susceptible to disease and insects. It's the tree's defense mechanism in trying to conserve what resources it has. They know how to conserve little to no water supply so they can survive. Most trees will nicely recover eventually.
If you notice, there are lots of different variety of trees in our immediate area that are showing unusual displays of dropping seeds and shedding leaves. They're stressed out due to drought conditions in many areas of Manitoba. I see many residential streets and avenues full of seeds and leaves through City travel.
Think of how you might drop and wilt, feel stressed out or not be at your majestic glory while baking in higher heat temps, blazing sun and with little or no water to sustain you.
I also agree with a previous post to fully research trees in your area to find a good fit for your space and maintenance requirements. It's good to know their habits and growing patterns and if they are a cleaner tree.
As for leaves dropping, your tree or trees might be disappointing right now, but they are just doing what they do when they are faced with a severe lack of water.
I enjoy what they provide to beautiful spaces in their good years. You might need to give them some sympathetic thoughts right now

It's very much an off year.
