Trees

Problem with buying this late in the season is you're probably getting the tree nobody else wanted. Maybe that's alright if you find a tree that's practically being given away for end of season but otherwise I'd do my research and hit the ground running in the spring when you can have your pick of the litter.
New varieties always popping up but best I've found that can grow reliably here are:
- Odyssey. As big as grocery store apples. I picked them at what I think was just a little over-ripe last year so will reserve judgement for a few weeks when this years crop is ready.
- Norkent. Nice Apple pear flavour/ apparently store all the way into January. Pretty good size but not quite as big as Odyssey.
You'll see some places sell Honeycrisp (the ones grocery stores sell for a killing), which I've seen rated as low as zone 3. Would be interested to hear from anyone that's had success with these locally. Great Apple (probably my favourite that you can grow anywhere) but wondering how much riskier the later harvest day effects things (as late as October) in our zone.
If buying from a big box, make sure you Google the tree type first. Don't automatically trust that because they're selling its going to survive here. Have seen Red Delicious and Golden Delicious for sale in Brandon, which are rated for more moderate climates.
