My son works for a pizza place in Brandon and earns about half of minimum wage. He also gets to keep 100% of his tips to subsidize his wage. He has to pay for the additional car insurance for delivery drivers and he has to pay for his own gas. Please keep this in mind when you order your next delivery meal. Some places do not have a delivery fee and therefore are not contributing to the drivers wage. Please tip them for bringing you your meal.

I tip based on good service, not on a person's choice of employment.

Tip for service not employment. My fiance is a delivery driver. He makes minimum wage plus tips. And we pay for everything your son does also. Gas, repairs, oil changes ect. Plain and simple if I can't afford to tip I don't. If it's poor service I don't. Tips are a bonus not a requirement.  
Perhaps he should seek out a restraunt who pays fair wages.

That's got to be illegal to be paid less than min wage.

First off, as your son, I would be absolutely horrified if my mother made a post for me on the internet, about how her son should be tipped. I hope he has some independence!  
 
Like others, I will tip for good service and good service only.  
 
As for other jobs that may pay more - I look at job sites everyday, as I always wonder what is out there that might be different and interesting.  
 
I know that Home Depot is forever hiring. I am sure there would be evening and weekend shifts. I know they are having a East side Mario's job fair this week.....

Let’s just do away with tipping altogether and just do a good job because that is what you are paid to do.

If one gives poor service and not being prompt in delivering, a person won't be getting any tip from anybody.  
 
BTW, I get annoyed going to a restaurant to get something to go and be expected to tip when I made my purchase.

If I save enough that I can go out and eat or order delivery - that is a treat for me.  
 
I might not have saved enough for a tip, they are getting a wage. Why don't we just tip everyone?  
 
If I get good service - I will tip...but it should not be expected.

Tipping should always be an OPTION. Although I usually tip I won’t if I get poor service or a bad attitude. Something I have encountered a few times in the past year is being asked “Do you want your change?” This is no different than pan-handling and they don’t get my change or a tip.

I’m ordering a product from a company, who offers to deliver. It’s up to them to pay their drivers! If they don’t want to pay their workers, then they shouldn’t offer that service option. Do you tip workers everywhere you go? What makes delivery drivers so special? They didn’t cook it... they simply drive across the city to bring it to you.  
Do you tip shoe salesman when they have to go back to find you your size? Do you tip your McDonald’s employee that has to go get your food, wrap it, pkg it, go get the sauce you forgot to ask for, etc? They provide a service. Do you tip the kid getting you popcorn at the theatre.  
A daycare lady cleans your kids diapers, sometimes puke, boogers, etc. The wear and tear is on their house. Which they can deduct a bit at income tax, as can the delivery driver on their car. Do you tip them to do that extra work? Nope it’s i:ncluded in the basic price you pay. Which in this case is the food being delivered.  
I’m so tired of people telling which jobs should earn a “tip” for doing their job. And are all these “tips” being claimed at income tax time?  
If you aren’t making enough without relying on generosity... find another job. I don’t get tipped in my job, so I think I’ll do away with tipping everyone else for doing theirs too.

It is his job. What he gets paid to do, or a job he likes.  
 
The one's that bang constantly on your door, I have a very small house, you can tell that from the outside, it only take me 15 seconds to get to the door, no need to keep banging on it (but we always watch for them anyway)  
 
When they do not say hello, and just take you order out of their bag and throw it at you.  
 
We always get what our order is doing to cost and have that exact change ready - with tip money. When I give him the money and he stands there for 30 seconds...nope, be on your way.  
 
Everyone has bad days. But if they are relying on tips, they had better say hello, hand your order over nicely, not stand there expecting a tip and say thank you.  
 
On that note - we do tip our delivery driver, as we always order from the same place and they are all very pleasant there. But, it does not mean I have to...Brandon sun delivery, going out to eat, the hairdresser, the women at a chain store that helped me......It could go on for ever.  
 
They have a job to do. I am sure they knew the wage and what it entailed when they took the job.

So lets say the average tip on a Friday or Saturday night is $3. Seems reasonable as some don't tip and some maybe $4 or $5. So to make that easy $200 like it was nothing that poor driver has to deliver 67 pies! That's a lot of driving.

Forgot to add on my last post lol. But my kids order a lot off of Amazon and Wish. Am I supposed to be tipping the delivery drivers for that as well? They do the same job, pick up a product, drive, drop off a product. Same with my mailman. Do you see where I’m going with this? It not my fault that they are paid so low.

Something I also think a lot of people forget and it can make or break them at tax time.... you need to claim your tips. If you work for an employer where tips are a possibility, whether you keep 100% of them or a tip out percentage, it's still considered a part of the employment income. Some employers actually show on t4's how much someone made in tips. Most don't and it's up to the employee to keep track of. So hopefully your son keeps a book some where so he can keep track of his daily tip amounts as long as he is employed at said place. There is a spot to claim them on his taxes.  
 
As for tipping, we tip based on service. If we order food and are quoted an "estimated time" of arrival we watch that. We usually add an extra 5 minutes to the quoted time because it really doesn't take that long to drive across Brandon. We also keep in mind the weather conditions, time of day we order, and if any special events are going on in town that could affect delivery times. If our food shows up with in that window, the driver is polite and acknowledges us in a polite manner when we answer the door, instead of treating us like some mundane chore they are supposed to be doing, then we tip.  
 
If we don't get a polite hello or greeting of some kind, they were late, the debit machine is just tossed in our faces, or the food just roughly handed to us, then no tip. The other thing that annoys me is the drivers who punch in the amount we are supposed to pay and just hit whatever buttons so when we are handed the pin pad, all we see are the tip choices we can select.  
 
If you are working some where, where tips are an option, bottom line, go above and beyond and prove you deserve it, they should never ever ever be expected and if you show up at my door with that mentality (expected tip), you won't get one.

When you hire a contractor to come into your house to redo your bathroom, do you tip them for their service/quality of work? If you can afford the Reno you can afford to tip the contractor, no?  
 
Just because you work in the food industry does not mean you deserve to be handed free money for doing your job.

As a delivery driver myself, I have to add to this convo! Under no circumstance is a tip expected what soever when delivering your food! I am happy just having a convo with the customer! As long as the order is paid, anything else above that is a nice little surprise! Never expected, but always appreciated 100%! I try to build a good relationship with customers! So thank you everyone that orders food for delivery! Your business is very much appreciated!

When is it time to do away with commission based salaries in Canada you always see job adds for furniture shops and driver jobs posted because some poor sucker gets roped into these jobs. Be much better to make it min wage or better if you want to retain a great employee plus tip bonus which would be up to employee to report at end of year. Even the vehicle industry has a similar model reminds me of poor Gil from the Simpsons “I need this sale come on. I need to eat this week”

Delivery drivers at some companies pay per delivery. They are commission baised and employed as an independent contractor. This is how they get away without paying min wage. I agree it is crap but it is what it is and legally they can do it.

Something I have noticed in this thread is the mention of timely delivery... as a delivery driver the time isn’t always up to us the driver.. the kitchen staff play 90% into this role. There are times I’m there ready for my delivery but my delivery isn’t ready for me because it hasn’t come out of the oven yet. And where I work we don’t tip out the kitchen staff, drivers get to keel their tips.

You do not like your job or the boss is cheap on wages then grab another job. Are some people take a delivery job mostly for tips reasons knowing they will get a lot of money? If so do not say customers that do not tip are cheap then you have a cheap intention too.  
Why blame customers for your wages the customer isn't being delivered free food, restaurant meals are not super cheap and tips are optional.

although i agree with tipping ( when the service warrants it ) my problem is with the companies that automatically add a delivery charge,so by the time you add a tip on there it could be $10, $15 $20 more,so unless you are a spectacular driver( which i have yet to see one and im not saying they are not out there) tips are few and far between

When somewhere has a delivery charge, please know the driver does not get all of that, not even half of it. Where I deliver we get well less than half of the delivery fee the rest goes to the store

I was a delivery driver for a couple years for a pizza chain. A lot of drivers are contract drivers, so they get paid per del: not an hourly wage. Which, if it’s busy, is awesome. Mostly I was tipped, and sometimes I wasn’t. That didn’t change my service. Was it kinda annoying? Yes. But I never went on the net to beg for tips. I did my job, looked presentable and always had a smile on my face. You can’t expect tips. They are a bonus.

If there is a delivery fee I never tip. Tell your business not to charge that or work somewhere else. Pretty simple.

It shouldn’t be you complaining on social media about your son’s job, it should be him. I’d be embarrassed if I was him. If he’s not, then he’s not old or mature enough to deal with it (not that complaining like this is mature, but you catch my drift)
