    I’m newish to the city and am wondering about biking etiquette. Is it okay for bikers to bike on the sidewalks in the city? I’m going to try out the bike paths, but am wondering about using the sidewalks on the way.

    No it is not proper etiquette and against the rules but it does happen a lot.  
     
    I really don't mind if it's young kids.

    Street or sidewalk

    Ride on one or the other but don’t jump back-and-forth. Nothing pisses off drivers more than finally getting around a bicycle safely coming up to a red light and having the bike pass you on the right or hop on the sidewalk and go to the front of the line and now you Gotta do it all again. Do one or the other.

    By law, we're vehicles so we need to be on the road. I personally try to stick to only side streets. Fortunately, it's fairly easy with most of my destinations being on this side of the river.  
     
    Another biggie . . . don't ask for trouble. Be visible.  
    Get a bright-coloured helmet (or at least don't dress in all dark colours). And front/rear lights for night riding can't hurt either.
