Is it safe to go ice fishing yet? Walk ons? How thick is the ice?

Well the news certainly says it is NOT and far from it being frozen. Poor dog got caught on thin ice, phew it was rescued successfully. Ice is very thin.

Ice on my dug out is about two and a half inches thick. I wouldn’t walk on it. It isn’t cold enough yet!

ice at oak lake is only 2-3 inches. I saw that post on fb today...

This topic comes up every year at this time. 4 inches of clear ice is safe to walk/skate. 5-6 inches of clear ice is safe for snowmobiles or ATVs. 8-12 inches of clear ice is safe for cars or light trucks. 12-15 inches of clear ice is safe for medium trucks. Obviously there are always risks to venturing onto frozen water but there are also many ways to keep yourself safe. Happy ice fishing!!
