Looking for some ideas on where to hunt around Brandon, hopefully some nice bucks or elk around? Somewhere I won’t need permission.

With no permission needed, the Brandon hills wma is pretty well your best option. I doubt you would see any elk in there though.

The same thing comes up for discussion every year here. It is a WMA. You can hunt there, and it can be done safely.

that deer/elk hunting is not allowed, unless they count as big game in which case a license will definitely be needed.

Deer are considered big game….but elk you need to apply for a tag and get drawn, not everyone who applies will get a tag. Deer you just need to buy a tag.

I've successfully hunted in the brandon hills for about 10 years now. It does get pretty crowded come rifle season though. There is a website I don't have off hand, but it shows what is wma, if you search manitoba wma maps it will show you an interactive map. Or go down to conservation office near 13th and by a landowners map. It will also show you where any crown lands you can hunt without permission are. Drive around or walk around on foot to scout the area in the evenings to find where the deer are.

You don’t have to have permission to hunt crown land but they do advise hunters to talk with the person renting crown land first as a courtesy.

Courtesy is nice but it's still not required for a hunter to figure out and then find the renter George.

True as I did earlier post. However real estate services ( whatever they are called now ) does advise that courtesy be extended for safety among other reasons. A few years back they even made signs available for renters to hang on the fences .  
A lot of crown land remains an integral part of many businesses.

Is the only way to do things for hunting. Especially dealing with landowners. Courtesy goes a long way. Might even get yourself a fresh spot to hunt.  
 
Has happened to me. Landowners generally reward the honest , law abiding Hunter !!

Where hunters did not ask permission to hunt on people's property but camped out anyways. As they did not ask permission, they were asked to leave. Please always ask permission if you want to hunt on someone's property and don't go back and vandalize the area if they say "No". Please also respect "No Hunting" signs as they are there for a reason.

Boundaries are still being defined but an area ban on hunting of moose, deer and elk has been issued due to a mule deer having been found and euthanized in the Lake of The Prairies area that had Chronic Wasting Disease in October.  
More information is supposed to be released as it becomes available. This information came from this weeks Virden Empire Advance.

Received an email from Manitoba Agriculture regarding the closed area. Attached a photo.

Certain areas of province will be closed to deer season this year due to Chronic Wasting Disease discovery not in Brandon area but hunters do travel.
