Possible Sportsplex Closure?
11/17/2008 at 9:35 PM
As many of you have probably read in the paper today, the city is reevaluating the operating costs and feasibility of keeping the Canada Games Sportsplex open for the public. The new YMCA will be a great long over due benefit to the City, but with our growing population is 1 pool really enough to fill the needs of everyone? It would have to be one extremely large pool. I'm a member at both the Y and purchase punch cards at the Sportsplex to attend Aquasize. The Brandon University is building a wellness centre, and the absence of a pool is rather strange. It is of course a cost issue. Pools are very expensive to build and maintain.
The Sportsplex isn't that old of a building and if I recall it was built specifically for the Canada Games back in 1997. Brandon also has a large surrounding area which support the facility. I'm not an expert nor do I wish to be mayor, but isn't there a way to keep it running, doesn't it seem silly to close a perfectly good facility? Perhaps if it is promoted more we can attract bigger and better things?
What are everyone's thoughts and feelings on the issue at hand?
