Anyone who was watching the Neelin/Massey highschool football game on Friday would have noticed some very inconsistent and terrible refereeing. Well, I was really peeved by this so I interviewed the head ref after the game.  
 
Apparently, 3 refs retired this year. That, on top of 5 new schools in the division, makes a giant shortage of officials. So they needed refs who had literally never done this before to volunteer.  
 
So when I thought these refs looked like they didn't even know the rules of football, I was right. 2/5 didn't know. 1/5 knew, but was under qualified. Only 2 of the refs were qualified to be officiating that game, and one of them was just the backfield umpire, not in a great position to make important calls.  
 
So if anyone was wondering, that was the situation. It really sucks that they are facing that shortage of personnel.
