OT/Shootout loss extra point
10/29/2009 at 7:38 PM
I wonder if I'm alone on this. I've often wondered why it is necessary to give a single point to a team who loses a game beyond regulation time. Hockey seems to be the only sport who does this. The NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball go strictly by winning percentage. They don't give the Blue Jays an extra point for losing in extra innings, nor do the Raptors or Dallas Cowboys get the extra point if they lose in OT.
I believe that this would be well served if implememnted in hockey, from Junior all the way up to the NHL. The competition level would heat up I believe at the thought of getting nothing for losing in OT. My point is, in a long season where the playoff bubble is between a team with say 35 wins and say 5 OT/Shootout losses. They would end up with 75 points. Then comes a team with say 28 wins, but has say 15 OT/Shootout losses. So by virtue of one point, a team with 28 wins beats out a team with 7 more wins than them. To me it just doesn't make sense to reward somebody for losing....at any stage of the game.
I welcome anyones input on this subject. Am I the only one who thinks this needs a tweek?
