A few oddball Wheat King stats
11/4/2009 at 7:43 PM
Being just a smidgin past the 1/4 mark of the season, I thought it'd be a good time to share a few oddball Wheat King-related stats from this season that you may or may not have been aware of. Please take with a grain of salt, bearing in mind that the season is still only 19 games old. With the player stats, there's a chance that one assist or goal are out in the odd situation as my internal stats totals don't account for post-game stat corrections made after teams submit video.
All that said, it'd be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on any or all of these...
- The most interesting to me is the contrast in team records between weekend days. On Fridays, they're just 2-5-0. Contrast that with Saturday, where believe it or not they're a perfect 6-0-0. Go figure!
- Scoring first is always important, but so far this year it's been literally life or death. Record being 10-1-1 when scoring first, 0-6-1 when giving up the first goal.
- At home on Wheat King penalty kills, Brandon has scored just two less shorthanded goals on opposing teams' powerplays than opposing teams have scored themselves on their own powerplay (four shorthanded goals, six powerplay goals given up)
- Since getting Brayden Schenn and Matt Calvert back from NHL camps, the Wheat Kings are 7-6-0-2.
- In the nine games since being named the Wheat Kings' third 20-year old, Aaron Lewadniuk leads the team with 15 points and is tied for the lead with seven goals (Brayden Schenn also has seven over the same span).
- While some of the difference can be accounted for with his solid West coast road trip, the stats so far show a very different Jay Fehr at home compared to on the road. At Westman Place, he's less than a point per game player with just two goals and six points in seven games. On the road, he leads the team both in goals (eight) and points (17) in 12 games. Scott Glennie is the opposite... leading the team with ten points in seven games at home, while being under a point-per-game on the road (three goals, six assists in ten games).
- Since the Wheat Kings acquired goaltender Jacob De Serres, Andrew Hayes has an 0.875 save pct and 3.36 GAA in six starts (four wins, two losses). De Serres has played three games, with a 1-1-1 record, 0.916 save pct and 2.33 GAA. I'd be careful of jumping to too many conclusions based on so few of games, but interesting nonetheless to see if it's a trend or a blip on the radar.
As the season goes on and I have more games to base data on, I'll be sure to do this a time or two again
