Giants win Mem Cup - Back door?
5/28/2007 at 9:44 AM
As most probably know, the Vancouver Giants knocked off the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 yesterday to win the Memorial Cup. Both were clearly the top two teams in the tournament and if they played the game again, it could have been a completely different result. They were that evenly matched.
The point of interest is that the Tigers actually won the WHL final against the Giants and a birth in the Memorial Cup as the league champion. The Giants ended up getting into the tournament as the host team.
The question is... what are peoples' thoughts on a team that lost out in the playoffs getting the opportunity to win the national championship? Some will call it going in the "back door" while others will say "if you can beat the best, you deserve it."
It should be noted that Kelowna did the same thing the last time the Cup was in the West three years ago... and I think it was Ottawa in the OHL that did it recently as well.
If you are against the host team getting in, what other suggestion would you make for deciding a national champion?
