Wheat Kings training camp

Surprised no one has started this topic yet with camp starting this week. Any trade predictions, imports? etc

I say we will have Provorov and Kylington when the dust settles. Maybe a push for Point??

Something about 30 degree heat has hockey in the on-deck circle for a couple more days We're at that time of the year where things come together in a hurry.... Camp to intrasquad game to exhibition in the blink of an eye!

Training camp roster as posted by Luber's Lounge is at the link below. Imagine it will be quite competitive for any openings. 11 forwards (without counting Lewis, Mattheos), 7 D and of course Papirny in goal from last year's team..... though some decisions re overages and potentially imports will effect those numbers.

Man thats a huge hole to fill with Ryan Pilon quitting hockey. Hope it's not a decision he regrets in the future.

That will be a big gap. He is a great player. Here is the link to confirm it.

I know that I and I am sure may other forget these guys are only 15 to 20 years old. Even thought they play and compete like men they are still kids. The expectations are high and there is a lot going on in young mens lives.

Tough decision to walk away with being drafted and being on a top team in the league. Maybe things will change ! If not we should all wish him the best. There is more to life than hockey!

Looking forward to first time at the rink tonight!

It's early but I see that Craig Button has Kale Clague ranked as the top prospect in the WHL for the 2016 draft, 11th overall. Lot of question marks as far as what the defence will look like (euros, overagers), but even before Pilons decision it's clear Clague is ready for a bigger role:

From earlier this week I see that the WKs are the top ranked team in the CHL to start the season.

They have Kelowna as 2nd in the WHL, 4th overall. Think the East is going to be quite competitive this year (expecting Red Deer to load up, teams like Regina for example to improve), so probably very premature to already be talking a WHL final rematch!

Expecting roster moves

Looking forward to a few roster moves maybe today. At least the 15-year olds will be reassigned I would think.

Looking again at the roster/overage/defence situation, I'd be very surprised if Waltz & Erkamps aren't on the team. We have only 6 eligible defencemen on the roster (assuming Provorov returns from Philly).

It would be perfect if The Flames sent Kylington to play here, because with injuries, you'd never be able to carry only 6. Then, there's the WJC taking him & Provorov away for a month or so, and we'd be really short. (15-year old Sambrook earned a call-up for 5 games anyway).

This would also end up leaving Bukarts as the odd man out import-wise and overage-wise, assuming that McGauley returns. Also hoping that the NHL camp guys get returned before Opening Night, which often isn't the case.

Really looking forward to Friday's opener vs SC!

On a side note, it looks like SC could struggle this season.

Re-assigned the 15-year olds, and re-assigned G Dechaine, so no surprises there.

In somewhat of a surprise, the Wheaties brought back defencemen Thom, a 19-year old who was here a couple years ago. Glad to get a bit of depth.

It's now doubtful that Hawryluk, Quenneville, & McGauley would be returned in time for this weekend. At least that means Bukarts can play, and a couple other guys (maybe Gutenberg & McCorrister) can see some action.

Wouldnt be bad to get a second look at some guys. We have enough depth that we shouldn't have an issue dispatching the broncos without these guys. Side note - anyone see Kylington's goal against edmonton? Kid has some skill. Might not see him here in brandon, but one can dream!

I don't know where Kylington is on the depth charts (Calgary's or their farm team's), but I see that TJ Brodie will miss a couple months with a broken hand. That would possibly hurt his chances of coming to Brandon.

You'd think he has enough skill to warrant the AHL, and if he isn't given the opportunity may to back to europe for the year. A case can be made for the wheatkings with high minutes in a year we're making a run for it, but its probably a tough sell for a kid with his eyes set a little higher

Per Bruce Luebke, Hawryluk is likely to play tomorrow in Swift Current

Quenneville is still with the Devils and is expected to play for them tonight. From the link below,
"It's either Brandon (WHL) or New Jersey for him so if the Devils are going to keep him around - even for a nine-game tryout - they will have to be very confident he can at least hold his head above water at the NHL level. When all is said and done I think he'll go back to the WHL for another year but if he can string together a few good games things could get interesting."

Today Brandon released Lisoway and named Erkamps captain and Waltz a full time alternate captain. One would have to assume Bukarts will have to be the one to go as a 20 year old
