What happened to our team? 10 -0 to Red Deer OMG !

We gave up 7 goals in the first period! I think only one was a power play and the rest even strength!  
 
We are missing Hawryluk, Quennville and Walsh. We had a couple of 15 year olds in the line up. But still, that shouldn't happen!

I checked the score on the WHL website a few minutes into the 2nd period and couldn't believe it, the score was already 8-0 for Red Deer. I honestly don't even know what to say, other than its probably one of the worst games they've had in quite a while.

2 missing good players is no excuse. Good old Papirny let in 5 goals before being pulled at 14:05 in the 1st period with only 11 shots on goal.  
Felt Thompson did fairly well, given he had a deflated team and lack of defense.  
These guys need to get their act together if they want to go after the "gold rush".

McCrimmon will be busy on the phones this week if he wants to do anything in the playoffs. Some big names will be moved around I'm sure. Look what Red Deer has done over the past week when Kelly was overseas.

When is the WHL trade deadline ?

I ben to every single home game and honestly I'm not sure what that gold rush supposed to be all about - team only plays good when they hit and hussle - unfortunately that only happens once in a blue moon even with all the players in the lineup . You can only win if you grind the other team down not by playing pretty no hit hockey - that's just my two sentences . I myself do believe it's coaching - wish Kelly would stick to GM and get a coach and let him coach too ....

Tho the teams playing were in different situations, the closest comparable I can think of was five years ago when Edmonton came into Brandon. At the time Oil Kings were quite a ways ahead of the WKs in the standings and ended up showing it by skunking them 9-0 in that game. Rock bottom.  
 
Junior hockey's a funny thing. I did a lookup and the next day Edmonton started a 6 game losing streak on their way to winning only 9 of their last 29. From there the Wheat Kings turned their season around and won 18 of 25 including a win over the Oil Kings and finished ahead of them in the standings.  
 
Call me an optimist but look forward to seeing how they respond today. Different situation in that this is still a team that's first in the division and one that was missing a good chunk of its roster, but games like last night seem to have a way of both making one team feel like they're better than they are and making the other realize how much better they have to be.  
Tough situation today being an early game against a team that's given them some trouble... But at some point you realize that you have the talent to be on the other end of that score if all players commit to working every game and realize that if you don't bad things happen no matter how good you're supposed to be.  
 
 
 

Last I looked we are in first place in our division. That is without povorov, and Johnny for a month. We missed clague for the first month of the season also. We have 6 local kids in the team who work as hard as anyone. Sure they got their butts kicked last night. By the trade deadline this team will look much different. I just hope all you negative nannies will come back on this site and eat some humble pie when we at least get to the eastern conference final against red deer. Go wheaties!!

Is getting you but kicked fun? No. How you react to it is the character of a real team. With guys away and injured it does have a effect. Take 5 guys out of any line up in the league and the results would be similar.  
When they have all their players are in the line up they have a good top to bottom team. All the talking heads picking them as a top 10 team has a effect on 16 to 19 year old kids. The problem is that the game is not played on the ice not in a building in Toronto comparing 3 leagues .  
 
I have season tickets and they have a very good team. The puck isn't going as easy as last year and more are going in than last year. Last night was a time to reset and look forward as a playoff run is not done in Jan !! Go wheat kings!

last night was some payback for when the Wheat Kings beat a team in the same fashion. They will bounce back, it was only one game. If they start loosing many games in a row like last night then panic. It's been 17 years since the last whooping like that, so it's not a common occurrence.

They are getting wins against teams in the division and conference that are below them in the standings. Wins that should happen against lower ranked teams! The benchmark to me is how do they play against the better teams in the conference that are on par with their talent? Right now they have not and cannot beat those teams. There is some intangible on this team that is missing and I cannot put my finger on it! I don't see big moves coming before the deadline either. KM will likely bring in 20 year olds off the street to fill those spots. That will likely be it.

the Rebels have acquired Luke Phillp. Another big trade to load up some more. Seems like the Wheat Kings are behind the curve to me!

I blame Waltz for a lot of this. Sure, he is only one player, but to quit on the team at the time he did, when they are short staffed already, with 3 players at the World Jr's and several other players hurt, shows unbelievable selfishness and disregard for his teammates. If he had walked away sooner they could have kept another 20 year-old, but the team put its faith in him and he crapped all over them. It had to be a big blow to their morale.  
 
Having said this, I also think its not too late. Hopefully KM can make a move or two at the deadline and improve the team and have a good playoff. But we won't be a Memorial Cup contender like we had hoped.

If you look up what the Rebels gave up for it then I wouldn't hold my breath of something big going to happen in Brandon - Kelly is a super GM but I believe even he feels that giving up the future for the team this year is not worth it - go as far as you can with what we got - Memorial cup won't happen regardless ....  

Wheatkings are without three of their top four defence the last few games ( pilon from the start, waltz and provorov ) to me that's devastating for any team. I think the wheaties have done well considering that, plus bukarts is gone, one of the top offensive forwards in the league imo. tough to fill all those holes.

Rumors all over that Moose jaw may be interested in moving Brayden Point and who has been coaching him the last couple weeks (McCrimm).  
Trade Waltz for another D-man  
And then trade with Portland to get Bukarts back as Bdn has room for an import and 2 20 year olds  
Crimm always seems to pull off something.  
 
Also on this thread nobody seemed to mention that Hawerluik did a stupid hit that put the Wkings even shorter staffed

Pests are to use hard play and trash talk to get under opposition skin. To run a 16 year old kid from his own hometown is pretty low. He knew exactly who he was going to hit from behind. cheap shot big time.

4-1 bounce back win over a good Hitmen team that they had yet to beat this year. Rumours of demise greatly exaggerated

and they got their A*&es whooped. The first time in 17 years. A good whooping like this might be good for them every once in a while.

He is still a good player sometimes selfish - true playing on the edge think he might get frustrated sometimes that he doesn't get more support in the hard hitting department and that leads to stupid hits - If you are a season ticket holder like I am for decades you will find that the crowd is getting right into it if they play hard compared to a silent crowd in those coasting games - just my opinion - I don't mean to say hit dirty but play hard ......... still not so sure if we want to break the bank for major trades .......

That is an example of character Win.  
 
Same line up, including Papirny, 24 hour turn around and they get a win. Would have been easy to feel sorry for themselves and roll over . Instead they man up and get a character win against a team that beat them at home in the last couple of weeks.  
 
Good on you boys! Winners get back up and fight for what you want. So called losers blame others, point fingers instead of looking in the mirror and going to work.

Most of the result of that "hit" was the kid going so fast toward the end boards. Jayce didn't hit him him so much as he made contact trying to cut between him and the net. Dangerous play, but it wasn't as dirty as it looked because of the speed.

He has skill which is the disappointing part that his selfishness leads him to continue to make bad choices on hits. Each of the last 3 seasons he has been suspended for dirty hits. The fact that he has skill means the team needs him on the ice not in the press box watching  
 
His 16 year old season he drew penalties but since then he has not had the teams best interest in mind. Two years ago his suspension almost cost the team a playoff spot.

Get a high end 20 year old for the rest of the season and a young guy that wants to play and a draft pick. Better than one guy that doesn't want to play and another that the street said wanted traded as well. Shmyr can play but if it was true he wanted traded he got his wish.  
 
It is amazing how Kelly makes these deals work

moved disgruntled Waltz and got a d-man with Memorial cup experience and size 6'5" 220 pounds.  
Also got 17 year old d-man with some size 6'0" 210 pounds and draft pick in 2017.for Shmyr.  
 
And I would think Crimm not finished with 6 more days until the deadline

Also wouldn't underestimate the value of the draft pick.  
Looking at the moves Red Deer made, 2nd round picks were pretty important pieces in more than one case...

Very disappointed to see Braylon Shmyr traded. He is a player to watch in the future. I was kind of hoping Hawryluk would be traded.  

Hawryluk needs to go....he is a liability every time he is on the ice.....yes he scores goals which we need but........for what price......he takes a lot of bad desisions
