Last night my sons two vehicles were broken into and had several higher end electronics stolen. Yes, he forgot to lock it so shame on him, however, beyond that point. It was all recorded on his security camera. Which can be viewed at the youtube link below. Police report has obviously been filed. It was a group of 3 teenagers or young adults that were checking for unlocked vehicles along McDonald Ave. incident occurred at approximately 2am. If any parents, roommates or spouses see a high-end laptop, external harddrives, usb charger or a DJI Phantom 4 drone with accessories with a grey foam case please demand an explanation on where got $7500 to buy the drone equipment and laptop and please consider forcing a return of the items to the rightful owner. Photos of the drone and foam case I will attempt to attach to this discussion. and yes... shame on me for not locking the car.

That's scary to watch actually unfold. I left my garage open one night and my car was rummaged through but surprisingly nothing was taken. They are clearly looking for quick things. Money, etc.  
 
I'm not sure how you put a stop to things like that.

Locks are for honest people..apparently in that neighborhood you can count on that not being the case in this day and age. If it's not cemented down or chained up it's a free for all. I believe in Karma, their day will come when they have something bought legitimately (hahaha) and to have it taken from them.

If, as everyone says, the thieves are looking for an easy theft made possible by an unlocked vehicle, then locking should be enough. I haven't heard about anyone having their cars broken into, just unlocked doors opened.  
 
Might be different if everyone always locks up (no easy scores then).

I used to not lock my doors because I don't ever leave anything in it, and was scared they would break a window but these clowns would just empty my owners manual registration fuel recites and garbage out on he ground so I started locking it and no problem but the did steal my chrome valve stem cap 3 one night, something must have scared them off but they got the last one then very next day.

this is not directed at the OP - but I cannot believe the stuff people leave in their car and then leave it unlocked. It is there for the taking. Yes, it is stealing, but they see how easy it is.  
 
I also bet these people that leave expensive things or forget to take their wallet, papers, etc in with them, never forget to take their phone!

I agree....nowadays it is safe to leave anything in your car..

Advertising this theft is inviting more car hoppers to get out there, because people are leaving 5700 dollar items out for them.That is temping and a step up from the usual sun glasses and parking meter change.

Many years ago someone I know was approached by a young man with a knife who wanted his wallet. The thief picked the wrong person.  
 
In the end my friend took the knife away and then took his leather jacket. The young man ran away. The knife and jacket went into the dumpster.  
 
My friend said hopefully he got the message of how it feels like to have your stuff taken away.  
 
Who knows? I would like to think so.  
 
I and my friend are NOT endorsing this action. Sometimes you have to just give up your stuff as it is just stuff. Nothing wrong with that.

You lock your vehicle's and take your high end electronics, money etc. inside your house. We've caught kids on our security cameras 3 times this summer. Never got in and bps has the videos. Appears to be young kids looking for an easy target. The officer we talked to said it's almost a daily occurrence and all over the city.

What I don’t understand is how much of this is happening with the video/security technology that is out there today. Even cameras that send a live feed to your cell phone. So compact and easy to set up. Yes there is a cost involved but in rural areas with gasoline, tools, equipment, semi loads of grain and even cattle being stolen it seems like a worthwhile expense. Some people drive into a yard and find nobody home and see an opportunity.... I get out of there as quick as possible because I assume there is a video camera hidden somewhere.
