Any eBrandoners purchase a ticket for this Saturday's Powerball in the USA?The jackpot is an estimated $700,000,000 which, after taxes, etc. might be about $400 million. But, in Canadian dollars....WOW!  
If it isn't won this Saturday, it could get to a billion. How much is too much?

Heard in the radio this morning that your chances of winning are 1 in 296 million... Yikes!

US lottos are a bit different than Canadian ones. The $700 million will be if you take it over a number of years. Up front payment would be a bit less than half likely, on which you'd still pay taxes. But as was said above, non-residents can claim most of that back.

You know what? I read that too on the Powerball site, I also did a bit of searching into The Lotter.com and it seemed legit. For $30, I felt it was worth a chance, you never know. I can't get down to Dunseith, I would ask my cousin in South Carolina, but she's laid up with a broken leg, so I've taken a chance and bought 3 lines too.

On the power all website it says you can't buy tickets outside the US. Winner can be a tourist though. Borders might see some extra traffic this weekend.

'The lotter' is registered online retailer that sells for lotteries across the globe. However, caution should be exercised, as there are bogus sites out there that say the sell powerball but are scams. I think in using your credit card, you are signing that you are 18 or over. (Collecting your winnings you will most likely need proof of age)

Pretty bad odds of winning....you don't win by not trying though...if I were to win, it would be enough to send a letter with some maple flavored bacon to every U.S resident, begging them to keep that idiot Trump (also, probably would great if they could keep the latest warmongering Bush family member out as well) out of office, courtesy of their friendly neighbors to the North. Seems like a great idea if I won the Powerball, right?

Having won nothing on my 3 tickets yesterday, I will try again on Wednesday for the 1.3 billion. Should I win, I would like to build a Costco, a casino, and whatever else eBrandoners select as a third option that they frequently wish we had in our city.

Read a list of things that are more likely to happen than win the lottery the funniest was the odds are better you get hit by lightning while drowning than win the power ball lottery lol

I am sure that Powerball will thank all of people who pay $30 to buy ticket and think it is nothing for them to lose compare to 900 million. That is kind of thinking that made them rich and richer out of people without doing anything really.  
Good luck to that one person out of 296000000 people.  
And I think the other 295,9999,999 people who will not win, will not be very happy about luck of that one person! Lol!

Only $12 :-(. But something nonetheless. Unfortunately due to the high demand now Thelotter.com is unavailable so I may not be able to buy tickets for Wednesday. Oh well, it was nice to dream for a little while and I got half my money back.

No. Start with that answer and then slowly back into "sometimes". Gambling is illegal in the United States. A State has the right to gamble or create a lottery ONLY within its borders. When a game or information about a game cross a state line, or the national border, then it falls into federal jurisdiction. So, some lotteries do sell TO THEIR RESIDENTS through the Internet but not across their state line. Powerball tickets can only legally be purchased at a state lottery sales terminal in the lottery jurisdictions that sells the Powerball game. A lottery can also legally sell tickets on the Internet, but only to persons within its own state. No one can sell lottery tickets by mail or over the Internet across state lines or the U.S. national border. No one except the lottery or their licensed retailers can sell a lottery ticket. No one. Not even us. No one. No, not even that web site. Or that one. You really don't need to send me questions about a specific site. None of them can legally sell lottery tickets across a state border or the U.S. border. No.  
 
Law prevent the SALE (exchange of consideration) of any interest in the outcome of a gambling event. If you are not buying from a licensed retailer in teh state or from the state lottery site (within the borders of that state), then you should not expect to be able to collect your prize. There are no regulations of websites that claim to sell tickets or to sell you a "service" to buy and hold tickets for you. Many lotteries believe that they would violated state and federal laws is they paid on those tickets purchased (if actually purchased) by an unlicensed reseller.  
 
You can legally travel to another state, buy a ticket, and bring it back to your home state (at least I believe that no state now has a law forbidding the possession of a lottery).

If you legally purchase a Powerball ticket, you can play the game and you can collect prizes. You do not have to be a citizen or a resident to play the game. You can be a tourist. That said, some states do have rules that seem to imply that a winner must produce evidence of citizenship or a federal SSN, but there are other ways to hold back taxes for a winner who does not have a U.S. SSN. Occasionally, some state lawmaker talks about limiting wins to U.S. citizens, but no laws have passed so far.

So, if I drive down to Dunseith and buy a winning ticket, can I collect or not? Does driving across the border make me a tourist?

Catman, in reading everything I have come across, yes you can drive to Dunsieth, buy a ticket and claim any winnings. I had two emails from lotter.com saying I had won $12 and it is in my online account with them which I can withdraw to a bank account or use to buy more tickets. I can't access right now as they have restricted access to the website until the powerball has been won as they can't cope with demand. I did some research on their website and am confident I will get my $12 when their website is up and running again.

Out lottery is no different in some ways. If you buy a ticket in Ontario and it wins, you have to go claim the winnings in Ontario. So by going to Dunseith to buy a ticket I would think you'd only have to go back to North Dakota to claim it.

If you win a small amount in Ont let's say, you have to drive out to Ont outlet from where you bought your ticket from and collect your winnings. However, if your winnings is a large amount you just collect it from the head office if I'm not mistaken.

I've got an American twenty burning a hole in my wallet. I'll throw in an Canadian twenty for your troubles...

I noticed an ad on ebrandon offering to pick up tickets for people.

Family member got me some this morning. Jackpot is now 1.5 billion, with 930 million cash value, converted to CDN. at 1.43 takes it to $1.329 billion CDN, before taxes. What would accountants advise? Hypothetically!

They let you back across the border to claim it even apparently

A friend of mine, a truck driver who frequents the US, was warned that they could confiscate any US tickets he was in possession of. They let him away with the warning, but did tell him that if he had a post office box he could leave them there. That was a while back, so border guards are well aware of this law.
