A business in Brandon missed a article of clothing on my bill. When I got home I tired on all the I had purchased. Looking at the bill something didn't look correct.... the store didn't charge me for a piece of clothing that I had at home. Now I plan to keep all. It's a matter of about 10 bucks.  
Do I keep all and keep my mouth shut or do I go back to the business and just tell him they made a mistake . Like I said it was under ten bucks.

Doesn't matter if it was only a penny. You didn't pay for it (not your fault), and now that you know you did t pay for it if you don't go back and pay for it then it is stealing. So I would go back with the item and receipt and pay for it.

I would go and pay for it, honesty begins with ones self.

go back to the store with the receipt and pay for the item that slipped through.

I think what the right thing to do and what people would actually do may be 2 different things.  
 
It is a tough call. I would like to believe that I would pick up the phone and let them know.

I once had a $500 mistake happen. I called the place THREE times to tell them and they never fixed the mistake. I didn't call again and I "pocketed" the money as I felt I did more than my part to try to pay it.

I''ll be like everyone else and suggest take it back, you''re stealing otherwise.

If the store had made the mistake and charged you twice for that item, would you expect them to correct the error ? That should guide your thinking to some extent.  
 
Beyond that acting with honesty and integrity is always the best approach.

It's like lying, for some people the lies can fly out of their mouths easily.

if you read the heading, she says she knows what she is going to do. I believe she is going to be honest, or would not have posted this. Her question is, what would you do?

and ask to speak to the manager and explain just what happened (as was explained in the op). I would wait to hear what the manager wanted me to do and then do it.

I Would go back with the item, but only when I need to shop at the store again, my time is worth something too.

Its called integrity, just showing up/ calling could save your servicers job even. Be honest the dividends pay in the long run. Also doing the right thing is an important peice of being a part of society. Cheers and good luck with your decision.

Because it's a retail store the employee might be charged for the mistake, and if you don't pay for this and nobody else do it, the employee is getting less money at the end of the month because you didn't go back and pay for yours and nobody else did either. So what if any of your children or relative work there they would be also get charged for their mistakes, so I'm pretty sure the employee will appreciate it!

I know your original post said you were going to keep the item. It's been six days and is that what you did?

its illegal for the store to take the item out of the employees check btw  
 
if it were me i would say id likley pay for the item but to be honest a bit of me would feel like keeping it from a large store (feel to guilty from a mom & pop place) i know many many times i have been over charged at a large store so a bit of me would feel like keeping it, in the end im always honest tho lol

I definitely go back and pay for the item. As others said, when you know you have not paid for the item, it would be stealing if you keep the item.

I guess everyone is extremely honest, at least in theory.

So if you are not from Brandon say 100 miles away as alot of out of town shoppers are does it change your response if it would cost you 50 dollars of gas plus your time to be honest?

Everyone would have kept the product. From experience, a lot of experience, people won't lie when you catch them but they VERY VERY seldom volunteer that you've accidentally given them something that wasn't theirs. They say things like "OH!! I was wondering what was going on" or "I was waiting for someone to contact me about this" but I haven't received many (although I have received some) calls where they say "This was given to me but it's not mine"

I hope your not in the livestock business, what you're saying is that if one of my animals ended up in your pen I would never hear about it from you, when we have an animal on our property we try and find the owner.  
I believe that some business still runs on a policy of honesty, and those who aren't honest are soon found out. Just for myself, honesty has paid great dividends.

I own a business that this happens too all the time, and I have to track them down. Everything we deal with is traceable but most people don't realize that it is. When I show up to their doors I get the kind of responses I mentioned. When I get things meant for others I always call them to come pick it up...and business' as a rule almost ALWAYS calls to tell you they have something that was given to them by mistake.  
 
I was just giving the opinion that the 100% of respondents to this discussion isn't my experience. In my experience maybe 1 in 10 calls me before I call them.

I guess when in business we do see the other side, the side that when dealing with some individuals we learn that all are not honest.  
Sad thing is that the world is changing for the worse, most people do not check their bill in the store, that i:ncludes me, and once you have taken merchadise out of the store it''s hard to straighten it out, especially with large stores that see a high traffic flow.  
I guess the people who wouldn''t bring items back likely wouldn''t comment on it.

Prices go up if you don't take items back.

That I would take the article back but to me it would be so situational. I live out of town and my drive time and gas money would be worth more than driving all the way back for one item. I might be inclined to call the store but if it was difficult to get through to customer service - like if I got an answering machine, or press x for this department then wait on hold for an hour then I'd probably hang up and just keep the item. I don't come to brandon often enough to make a special trip to return to pay for an item less than $10. If I noticed it while still in brandon I would likely go back and try to correct the mistake. I fully believe honesty is the best policy and you that karma is real so I like to be the best person I can be and be honest as I know it will come back at me one day as good fortune.
