When is the bird/or deer hunting season over? When I went to Brandon Hills 2 days ago I was on the B Line just turning on Blister trail I heard branches cracking on the ground then I saw a man few feet off the trail standing in the bush (not on a trail) with a vest I assumed he was there for hunting (maybe birds) so I turned around and back to parking lot I didn't go further not knowing if more men were along the trail. I cannot say if he had a gun or a bow so I have not gone there since then. Do they hunt on the weekends too? Is it safe to go on weekends?  
I love going there run in the trails, very relaxing in the nature but I find this very scary be in Brandon Hills in the trails among with hunters. If I want to get shot or beat up I would save the travel out of town and just go downtown at night.  
Hope hunting is over this coming week. I thought it was trails you can all year round for cyclists, runners, walkers.

I was wondering when the first post was coming about this. This area is for many outdoor activities, not just the ones you like.  
 
To answer you question though, deer season (for firearms) is just about to start. Muzzle loader season starts on monday and will run for 2 weeks followed directly by 2 weeks of rifle season.  
 
Don't worry about a hunter beating you up, maybe stop and have a conversation with one if they are walking in on a trail. You might be surprised by the understanding and knowledge of the area they can share with you.  
 
If you're concerned for your safety, grab yourself an orange vest for your run and keep enjoying this great area with the other outdoor enthusiasts.

Funniest thing crossed my mind when I read about getting best up by hunters, gives a sort of new meaning to "buck fever". Just imagine in court, " but sir, I couldn't help myself, I had buck fever".

I think statistics would show you have a much greater chance of being shot in the city of Brandon than in the country in hunting season.

It's crown land. It's open to the public to use...  
 
Why should hunting be banned. It's a few weeks out of the year! Just stay away for those few weeks if you don't like it. You don't see hunters saying all other activities should be banned so you aren't scaring these deer. Profit off of Hunting license's is used for game management, which i:ncludes there habitat, which i:ncludes crown land, which i:ncludes the Brandon hills, hunters have just as much rights to be there as anyone else.

This was a WMA (Wildlife Management Area) for years before the trails were developed in 1979 for X-country skiing.

The Hills are for all to enjoy. So if a biker hits a hiker on one of the trails. (And I know this has happened) are you going to tell the bikers to stay out of the hills too?

arax said why, because it was a wildlife management area first, hunting (especially rifle) is only allowed for a short time so why dont the others stay out of the area in hunting season if they dont like it, is it too much to ask that the area that was nicely shared by the hunters be available to them should they want to use it?  
 
if others fear for their safety stay out for a month  
 
op- its pretty asinine to think that just because someone hunts they are going to beat you up, do you think that about other kickers and bikers ect?

why can't hunter's stay out of the area, you ask.  
 
Most hunters will scout around a week or so before hunting. Maybe they have seen lots of activity of deer there and maybe that is their only source of meat for the winter! Maybe they want to eat1  
 
why can't you bikers and hunters stay out of the area for a couple of weeks? Is that too much to ask?  
 
I would bet you a pile of cash, you will not hear about night hunting going on there.

I didn't post this properly unless I miss a message but no one had replied with the answer of when is the hunting season (birds,deer,or ??) is over so I would feel safe to go back to Brandon Hills.  
I did not ask for a debate for pro/con on hunting season or who likes/dislikes of hunting.  
As mentioned I am new to attend the Brandon Hills I just thought it was a year all around of cyclists, hikers, walkers, runners, or etc.

why you got a debate is because the additional comments to your question, its fine to prefer not to be around the area when hunting is allowed (even if they take safety very seriously)but to think that just because hunters are there that youd get beat up and to compare the area in hunting season to somewhere i assume you think is rough is bound to start a discussion

I found your comment about not knowing if anymore men were along the trail offensive. I’m sure men are allowed to use the trails too.  
 
You say you saw a man in a vest, but not all vests are for hunting, and all hunters aren’t men, I’m also pretty sure some men also just go for walks on the trails.  
 
Considering your des:cription of your panic and retreat, are you sure it wasn’t a vested female photographer just off the trail taking pictures of birds

Not sure if the area is suited for it or not but bird hunting starts the beginning of September. If there is elk or moose in the area people could also be hunting those. Hunting season pretty much last from beginning of September to end of November. Longer if people have special hunting privileges.

lets all remember that many of the trails cross private land which these land owners graciously allow us to use them for all our hobbies. Hunting is as natural as walking miss. what isn't natural is all the tim hortons cups and water bottles on the trails...some people have absolutely no respect..

I am a hunter.... i am 125 pounds and 5'2......ps i am female.. yup i am definitely going to beat you up..... facepalm..... hunting is a natural thing, I fill my freezer each year with what I hunt. I do not do it to be cruel or to intimidate people who like to jog...... I can't believe the human race these days..... This is why aliens will not visit us.

As a male getting back into hunting that is a pretty pathetic attitude to have in a Wildlife Management Area. Funny you label hunters as murderers and women beaters. Same with our downtown area. My memory isn't as good as it used to be but I don't recall anyone being shot in the Brandon Hills or beat up. I have been downtown many times between sunrise and sunset and never have been shot or beat up either. If you are that concerned for your safety maybe the City of Brandon walking paths are more your speed and safety.

Certainly it would be more dangerous to walk your dogs in areas of Chicago- or even in parts of brandon at times . I am not meaning to run brandon down here but at times it certainly is dangerous.  
If you are ANYWHERE that there could possibly be hunters please wear some thing orange or red when walking and never assume that they know what they are doing . If a hunter wounds a deer he will follow it on private property into areas where he dosent have permission to hunt even into peoples yards . Some will say they have the right to do this . I just cannot wait for this season to be over .

today is the last day of hunting season.

Only for the hunter following the rules . There is always a few that dont stop till they get there trophy or run out of ammo. The first weekend is a bad time after the season . The conservation officers are spread too thin - infact it is to the point of being ridiculous. Good luck getting a RCMP to check out gun fire out in the forest somewhere - dosent mean poaching for sure could be just a skunk problem.  
Like I said wear some thing red or flame orange - if it is at dusk or after dark it is a good thing to have reflectors - some thing like a construction vest like sold at princess auto or just buy some reflective tape and safety pin it on your jacket front and back .

The link you provided is for hunting outside allowable hours. There was a man from Sioux Valley that was shot last year night hunting. These accidents are the exact reason why Wildlife clubs and the Manitoba Wildlife Federation have pushed for ban on night hunting.
