I like window shop online, I like both pc and Mac. I have a macbook pro dates around late 2010, I like using it, quality of the laptop with MacOS it's so efficient it was a lot money, but, it had sata hard drive, and sodimm memory upgraded from 4GB ram to 8GB that was purchased at NCIX in BC, now the Macbook pros and also the new RAZER laptop, have ssd's and non upgradable memory 16GB ram, in some cases the ssd(which is not sata) can be replaced, but if memory would have to be replaced would have to be desoldered or whole logic board would have to be replaced. These are not cheap laptops, if memory fails it would be costly to replace and hard to repair. I am computer field technician I have seen memory fail, not often, but it does.

Where did you get your computer field technician training?? It is not hard to replace and upgrade either the memory or hard drive. Although in your post you are all over the map so I am not sure what you are trying to do if anything. Also what is window shopping online is this something new?

Actually the Ram in the MacBook Air is soldered to the logic board. It has to be ordered directly from apple with the memory upgrade and can't be done after the fact.

isn't that a pretty standard thing for Apple products, limited user upgradablity?

The newer 2016 slimmer MacBook and MacBook pro aren't upgradable either all the memory is soldered to the logic board. And only the 13" model of the 2016 MacBook pro has a user upgradable SSD. The newer mac pros can have the SSD removed although it is extremely difficult and even if you can get original SSD out. Nobody is making any compatible internal SSD storage for the new MacBook pros

Except he is talking about an 8 year MacBook Pro not a MacBook Air

Op talks about how they have a 2010 that they have upgraded and that has an upgradable Sata HDD.  
 
Then they go on to say that the newer macs and Razor gaming laptops aren't upgradable.  
 
The OPs post my not flow well but the point they are trying to get across does make sense.

I think with the demand for slimmer, more portable yet energy efficient (long battery life) laptops. Manufacturers are having to make more compact components. There's not enough space to run cables and ribbons to the logic board to save space so they are soldered right to the board which makes them hard if not impossible to upgrade. It's annoying for the consumer and benefits the manufacturer because now as new parts and components come out if you want the new, new you gotta buy a whole new machine.  
 
I stick with a desktop for that reason.  
 
I just think this is the way technology is going in general. These days it's cheaper to throw away and buy new then it is to try and repair or upgrade.  
 
TVs are a prime example of this.

Things are changing all the time.

I understand, that Ms.Daisy was trying make a point that laptops with sodimm slots are easy to change the ram, and I get that, and yes the makebook pro I have does have sodimm slots and a sata hard drive. My point easy I was online shopping, I was checking out a new mabook pro it has 16GB of onboard memory, meaning it is soldered to the logic board, some laptops still have this technology, but I am afraid that this going happen to all laptops, the manufacturers follow suit with apple.

Not Mac but a lot of the 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation Intel Core i5/i7 laptops made by Lenovo / Dell / HP are just as fast as current budget laptops and can still be upgraded to take more ram, an ssd and in some cases msata ssd.  
 
A friend of mine picked up a Lenovo T430 Refurbished from the computer store next to Popeyes on 18th, he added a larger battery and replaced the standard drive with an SSD and removed the DVD drive and installed a 1TB hard drive.  
 
I know you said you were looking at Macbooks and that newer laptops aren't up-gradable defiantly not like the older models!

We live in a disposable society now. I wouldn't be surprised if laptops soon become completely enclosed therefore no hardware repair at all.
