Cadbury Creme Egg said "I received a letter last month apparently from CRA saying they recalculated my 2017 return and they found that I supposedly owe $422 plus late fees and it better be paid by December 31 or they’ll tack on more late fees. The letter never tells me where any mistake was made and I went over my return and still got the same outcome. I never heard anything more and I received my GST in January, so... ~shrug~
I wouldn’t have received anything from GST if they were suppressing it to pay off anything owed. Just seems fishy to me "
Like the other poster said, if you got a paper letter it's probably legit. The scammers generally work by email. The GST payments are prepped 4-6 weeks in advance, so if you got a letter mid-December the reassessment would have happened after the payment was prepped.
Try calling CRA and enquiring. 1-800-959-8281.
Edit to add: this is the time of year they run programs to make sure you claimed all your income. That's a very common thing to have to owe income for. Are you sure you claimed all your income, or that there isn't a revised t4 hanging out somewhere? If you call the above number, they can tell you for sure and provide you with the information.
