Suddenly, yesterday, my android Tablet showed "Gmail not working". I shut it down, restarted with no success. It's not synced so I've gone into settings then accounts: tapped on to "sync" & get a message on bottom of my screen saying that "sync is currently experiencing problems: it will be back shortly". All else is working fine. Any ideas on what the problem might be & how to fix? Thanks. I'm not particularly tech friendly so that's as much as I could see to try.

A typical fix-all is to clear an app's cache.

The steps can vary depending on which version of Android, and the manufacturer of the tablet.  
But the basic steps are to go into the device settings, load the application list, select gmail, and there should be some options in there.

Does this get rid of all my pictures, addresses etc?

Gmail isn't showing in accounts!

Clearing the cache clears out local data on your tablet. Anything stored on the gmail server stays on the gmail server, but clearing the local data means clearing out your account data so that you have to connect to your gmail account again

I had to set up a new account using my same email then go through all the security steps. All's well though. Just a bit odd.
