As the title says - what do I need to know when buying one and can anyone recommend a good one.

You are looking for a Over the Air HD antenna for free channels?

If your going set top, expect at most 2 stations (but much more likely one). If your going roof top, I think you will get 2. Not a great area for them. My info on the roof top is not as sure, so I could be wrong.

I don’t think you can’t get TV using just an antenna now. Haven’t been able to for a few years.

But as I said above, there is not much to pick up. VERY limited in use.

Was looking into this myself. If you're right in Brandon or just outside the city an outdoor antenna likely wouldn't be much more help. Really just two channels to be had and you can get those with an indoor. You may get lucky and be able to get City TV from Wpg, but only under ideal atmospheric conditions, certainly not all of the time. If you're close to the border maybe KMOT or KXMC from Minot...maybe. I believe that KNRR Pembina shut down. Again, if it is still on the air, you would need to be quite a bit southeast, near the border.

An indoor antenna will get one analog channel, CTV Winnipeg (ch 4), and one digital channel, Global Winnipeg (Ch 9.1).  
 
With an outdoor antenna and a tall tower, you might get more.  
 
(KNRR in Pembina, although back on the air is too far away from the Brandon area. It's low power barely aallows a good outdoor to pick it up in Winnipeg.

It was suggested to me to get an indoor HDTV antenna so I could at least get localish news. Does anyone have a brand they have had success? I won't be doing an outdoor tower! LOL

It' doesn't need to be an "HD" antenna, that's marketing lingo for "buy me, im desperate"  
 
Rabbit Ears will work in this area just fine. Amplified antennas can actually make things worse depending on the price...  
 
if at all possible, get an antenna rated for "VHF" high, and hopefully low as well.  
 
We have two channels here, analog ch4(VHF low), and digital ch9(VHF hi). your TV will display the digital one as 2.1 for some reason, that's how CKND wants it to work, probably because they used to be on ch2 before they went digital.
