WCG Home Phone vs BellMTS Home Phone

I have home phone with westman and its attatched to a modem that if the power goes out it only lasts about 8 hours,yet I'm told by them its not voip. Its plugged into the landline wall outlet and the modem, so why does it require a plug in battery if it's plugged into where a landline goes? I know MTS used to have the normal landline. Is there still the old school landline still available ? I just went with westman as was getting cable. Never had Bell.
