Photo download confusion

I'm in the process of receiving photos via email from family members. The photos are HUGE..so very huge!
Also they are taking forever to download as I am on dial-up internet service...such a s-l-o-w process!
My question is...how do I save these photos to 'My Pictures' ....on a smaller scale?
