It depends on whether you just want to string together a bunch of clips of family events or want to invest the time and money in the necessary software and camera to actually create interesting films that future generations will enjoy and learn from. I would caution against getting a cheap video camera due to the possible low image quality. The Canon XA series video cameras are certainly worth looking at as they are well made and all produce high quality images and are easy to use, and look great when played on a large screen HD TV. I bought the XA-55 which is fairly expensive and has a large sensor, but the image quality is as close to "professional" as you can get.
