Switching to cell from landline

I'm thinking of canceling my MTS land line and use all my calls through my cell phone.
I think there are some disadvantages but not certain.
Is it true that to rent videos, apply for credit card or banking, one must produce a phone number that is a land line number? Anything else I'm missing?
