Dumb Question re mp3 players

My son has shown me a MP3 player that he would like for Christmas
Looking in the flyers, the IPods appear to be MP3 players but offer much more in the way of accessories [speaker docs, etc]
Will the non IPod brand MP3 players work with these accessories or am I better to stay with the IPod brand?
It would seem that it is December 20th which is traditionally my first day of Christmas shopping
