Public Internet Profiles Debate: Good or Bad?

Recently, alot of friends and family have been debating public profiles such as Myspace, Facebook, Hi5, etc.
I personally think that they can be a good thing to keep in touch with family and friends, within moderation. I think on the other hand way to many people get carried away and expose private information to the extremes. So, do you think this can be detrimental in how one views that person? Or in how they are percieved? Whats your overall thoughts on Internet Profiles? Harmful, Helpful, Good, Bad?
