X-Box Arcade vs Elite ??

ok, my son is in the market for one of these but not sure which one to get? he is saving and spending his own money. He already has the regular X-box, plays it a lot but feels the need to upgrade. Has anyone out there had experince or heard from people that have purchased them? I have heard some people have had problems with the arcade version red-lining, and the elite has bigger memory? anyhow any recommendations?
