email program to replace windows mail

Ok- I use Gmail alot but my workhorse email client for personnel stuff was Windows mail. It went poof with my WIn 7 uograde. They seem to want users like myself to go to Windows live.
Anyways Eudora is one client thunderbird another but any suggestions on any other good email clients that downloads my email onto my hard drive like Mail did would be appreciated!!
I may have to fritter around with windows live but it tries to do too much.
