MP3 vs. Ipod

I'm a little technology impaired and I was just wondering what the big difference is between an Ipod and a MP3. Are Ipods better? Would I be better off buying a MP3 player, which would be cheaper? I haven't 100% decided, but my birthday was yesterday, I decided to get myself one or the other. But I really don't know the difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
