iPod trouble

So I ended up getting an iPod nano and couldn't be more happy, except one issue. When it's hooked to my computer with the USB it seems to constantly connect and disconnect. I have a heck of a time doing anything. I absolutely love it and it was so easy to put my songs on. But doing anything takes forever because it does this. Should I be taking it back? Is something wrong with my computer? I don't know where to start.
