Dumb Gmail-or operator

Ok its the operator. I am using several Browsers but G mail seems to be the same with all. I have yet to figure out how to sort these by a "normal method"
There is read/ starred,unstarred yada yada yada.
With Win live or express I can sort by who/from etc. What am I missing?? I know I can drill down by searching user etc but there has to be a easier way that I am missing??
