need a new laptop not sure what brand to buy

Help, I need a new laptop and there is too many choices out there. We use ours mainly for email, surfing the net, some games, school work. Generally a multi-purpose laptop. Have looked at a Asus K52 and a Samsung R780 both have pros and cons. Does anybody have a laptop that they love/would buy again? Need some reviews from users to help us to decide. Would like to keep the cost under a grand before taxes.
