Advice on Home Theatre System

Hello,
I am looking for advice and/or suggestions on a high quality yet affordable home theatre system. I have a new tv, and am looking for the most bang for your buck when it comes to a home theatre package. I would like to keep the budget under $1000. I have looked at some home theatre in a box type systems, but I am not sure how long they would last, and how high quality the sound is. I listen to a lot of music and watch movies. I am looking for something that will deliver rich sound, and last a long time. Any comments or advice would be much appreciated!
