MTS hoping to become the 4th national cellphone company

There have been talks for a while for MTS to become the next "big" cellphone carrier, and an auction of airwave frequencies is happening this year. MTS is thought to be the front runner in the auction. It should be interesting to see if MTS makes it as a national cellphone company. I wonder if they would retain the same kind of technology they have now (CDMA) or go with the technology companies like Rogers (GSM) have. They would be better off going GSM for nation wide.
The former CEO of Fido (that guy on the old Fido ads who would talk to dogs in a board room) was appointed as the head of the new national MTS wireless company when (if) it ends up getting created after the auction.
What does everyone think of this? It may not mean that you can use your current MTS phone wherever MTS owns towers outside Manitoba, but it could mean that Canadians may finally see decently priced bills for once.. everyone should be able to get a plan similar to what MTS offers for $20, instead of paying 2-3x more for the same sort of plan.
