I received a message on my cell phone last night and it was a company claiming to have a package for me. I do have one enroute from Amazon so seems legit to me. When I called them back they asked for my surname than they proceeded with wanting my DOB. That obviously triggered my suspicion so I hung up but wondered if anybody else has experienced the same thing?

I have ordered from Amazon.ca and Amazon.com many many times and have never experienced anyone calling. I would have hung up as well. Can you track your package?

That is strange, I also have ordered MANY items from Amazon and have NEVER had a phone call asking me personal info..

What company called you? Was it a company you've heard of? Asking for date of birth would raise flags for me.  
 
My experiences have only been with Purolator or Canada Post from Amazon (depending on the size of the shipment). Usually they just leave a card in the door with an attempted delivery and further details. I have never had call like that. As another posted said, with a tracking number you can find out more info.

Some couriers like DHL use local contractors to deliver stuff, so it looks like just some guy in a van. How would a shipper know your DOB to cross check it against tho... if all they want is your name and birthdate I wouldn't be too worried. Any more info than that and get suspicious. Or offer to pick it up locally yourself from whereever they keep them.

I just had a parcel (from Amazon) shipped to me via DHL. (a first in all of the years I've shopped with .com) It scared the crap out of me when they texted me at 7AM with a tracking # and website to track it on. They also called me. Check the status of your order on Amazon and it will tell you if it is being sent by courier....

What was their contact number and company name?
