Creating an app

Does anybody know how to go about creating your own app? I see that there are lots of options for app builder sites out there, but am unsure of where to start.
If it helps, the app I want to create is an organization, calender/planner type app that will incorporate kid friendly type of use.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be great!
