Is there anyone local that would be able to repair an older sony turntable?  
 
I can hear the needle playing but it doesn't seem to output any audio.  

I'm not a repairman, my father repaired all things electronic, including aircraft radio. I wonder if this is a pre-amp failure-does the unit use a pre-amp?  
Maybe the sound you are hearing is needle talk and not the output of the system.  
I replaced my own turntable with one that hooks direct to my computer, as well as my stereo.  
Wish you good like, there's something amazing about the sound from records, many of the current generation are just discovering.

It could be one of the following...  
 
Make sure the mute button isn't on and that the stereo input is set to phono. Also, if it has a speaker selection button make sure it's on.  
 
Have you tried the tuner or playing a cd through the stereo? It may be the stereo itself. If they are working then it may be the phono section.  
 
Don't forget to check all connections as well!

They need a preamp. If you don't have it connected to a proper phono input, all you will hear if needle noise. Sounds like that is your problem.

If the Amplifier/Receiver that you're using is a newer one, chances are that it doesn't have a Phono pre-amp in it. Some do, but not all.  
 
If it no longer plays through an amplifier/receiver that it used to work with, then maybe one of the small wires to the cartridge is broken or possibly the cartridge itself has failed. It's rare for them to fail, but it does happen.

Actually you will hear it through the stereo but you have to crank it very loudly but you definitely will hear more than just the needle.
