I am looking for a new television and wonder what brand to buy. Does it have to be a name brand to be compatible with remotes for MTS or WMG?  
 
Where is the cheapest/best place to buy a tv?  
 

This isn't an answer to your query about what TV to buy, but just wanted to clear up a point : the remote controls provided by MTS or Westman act to change the channel on the cable-box itself.  
For the most part, the only functions required on the TV would be on/off and volume control, both of which can be programmed into the cable box remote.  
So generally, any TV will work with the cable providers equipment.

Just re-reading your original post, and realized you weren't referring to changing channels on the TV itself, but to the ability of the cable remote to control the on/off and volume on the TV.  
The cable remotes will have the programmable codes for most brand names (and quite a few generics as well).

Yes, I was wondering about the MTS/WMG remote being able to control on/off and volume on the tv. My neighbor had an off brand and it didn't work with the remotes for those purposes.  
 
Now, to learn the difference between a basic HD tv and a "smart" tv.

Primarily, it is, if you have an internet connection and a router, your SMART TV can connect to the internet. There, you'll find Netflix and other streaming services (if you subscribe). That is the only real difference between the two.  
 
A Smart TV can also display photos or playback videos from a memory stick.
