There was another thread this week about starting a website, which I am glad too see local people in the business of. Right now I am in the early stages of starting a business, and for now just wish to secure a domain name, but probably will hire a local designer down the road. I checked on Go Daddy and the name I wish is available. Would a local designer be able to build on this if I secure this way at this time? Thanks in advance.

Don't go to GoDaddy. Go direct to CIRA for a .ca domain name.

Yes, secure your domain name and don't give it a long name as you would use it for your emails also.

Too funny. I tried for something to do. Entered a domain name and 8 different name registers were listed. Go Daddy was one of them lol. I bought a name off Go Daddy. They always have specials. Got a 2 year name for the price of one. It was under my name and when I found a host I transferred it to them.

CIRA doesn't register domain names - you might say they administrate and govern the .ca registry. But no matter who you register a .ca with, your registration will be connected to CIRA.  
 
As being one of those locals in the business of building websites, I can tell you I tried staying away from Godaddy, but if you stay firmly away from their up-sells before you check out (like hosting, email hosting, things to promote your site on search engines) you'll be great. Beyond that I stuck with them since I had to admit everything related to their core domain name registration services is great.  
 
However, if you do want to stay away from them, www.rebel.ca seems pretty good dealing with them through clients, and their prices are on par. If any .ca or .com registration or renewal is priced above $19.99 stay away.  
 
Register you domain and don't lose the administration logins - your designer will need them to help you out.
