Texas. What right did he have to shoot?

The "trespassers" were a little more than that. They were going farmyard to farmyard attempting to steal transportation home, and were armed at that. When the deceased fell out of the truck, the loaded (albeit the stock was broken) rifle fell out with him.  
 
I have heard stories from people in that area, and apparently there is more than what was released to the media. Fortunately the real trial will happen in a courtroom, and not in the media. No matter which way the trial goes, there are going to be a lot of unhappy people.

the facts before making up my mind. My mind is open.

What I heard in court (reported) tells me this is not cut and dry. Simply because the police did not keep all property under what I would say lock and key.  
 
Evidence is tainted and it sucks. As reported the SUV came in with one wheel(not rim) missing. long time or fast drives do that. They came into the site and parked.  
 
 
Instead of dooring knocking for tire help one went into a parked truck to open it . One went to fire up a ATV. All aggressive moves.

Its too bad we aren't a little more like Texas. Be a lot less criminals trying to come on to others properties to steal stuff, if they knew there was a good chance of getting their heads blown off.  
 
This case should be interesting however. The RCMP did another fine job of investigating and collecting evidence. Hopefully the truth comes out but I won't hold my breath.

We have family who live just down the road. Another family member lives about 2 hours south. Both are farmers and have been victims of vandalism and theft. The young men steal truck mostly or ATV's and drive them until destroyed.  
 
Coffee shop talk suggests that the deceased was one of the group. The farmers feel very exposed. Even the police express frustration with the situation as there are racial overtones clouding justice.  
 
I do not know the accused. When you live in a situation of fear and uncertainty emotion can lead one to react strongly with lethal consequences.  
 
I do not believe it is possible for the courts to respond with verdict that will be accepted by entire community.

On what authority do you pass along more hearsay when the thread is actually hoping for facts? Even the RCMP were complicit in this case, and theft doesn't justify murder so whatever. When I see nonsense about wishing it were more like Texas here, all I can say is go there. If you don't like murder not being justified by theft, then get the %^&* out of this country.

you would suggest that mr stanley let them come onto his property take whatever they want and then leave. they arrived with at least one gone and were in the process of attempting to steal property . usually waiting for a police response is futile .he should have the right to protect what is his.

Not one thing that a person owns justifies taking a human life for.  
Stanley could have pointed the gun at them and said just get back out of the yard and none of this would have happened.

He does not have the right to use lethal force to protect property, but he can use whatever reasonable force necessary to protect human life. To protect property, people can take pictures, get insurance, and report to police for POLICE to do their job. He has the right to protect his belongings but not at the cost of human life. As for the facts of the case, they are, as far as I know, still being disputed.  
The intense racism that was exposed following this incident is very concerning to me, and justifying the killing of another human being is something that is very serious to me. The kind of remarks about being entitled to kill a human being in protection of material things is, to me, totally disgusting.

And that seems to be the basis of it. The "I can kill you because you tried to take my stuff". No-one is right and everyone loses. The race aspect is already front and centre.

I agree with what you say, but one question that should be applied to that line of thinking is if deadly force cannot be used by the person protecting their property to theft, why does a person who is undertaking the theft have a loaded firearm in their presence. If stealing is a non violent crime then there is no need for having a loaded firearm in the vehicle with you, unless the intent of the firearm is to endanger others.  
Should also add that the broken off stock of the gun was found at the residence that they had taken the prior vehicle from, which toe means that the firearm was not alway within a vehicle.

When you commit a crime while armed with a firearm you accept certain risks, up to and including death.

Totally agree. When you commit said crime, while armed with a firearm, you have to be willing to accept the risks that go along with it! Why should we allow one to trespass on someone’s property, with a firearm???

I'm interested in seeing the facts that come out in court, rather than all kinds of hearsay. Countryboy84, your comment about the only mistake the accused made was in leaving witnesses is truly disgusting. I fully acknowledge how traumatic it can be to be robbed, but no THINGS are more valuable than a human life, or 4 human lives. THAT'S what is wrong with our society, the materialism that runs rampant that a human being can believe that a quad is worth more than the lives of 4 human beings. By your comments, you think that murder is less of a crime than theft. That is gross.

So you’re saying it’s okay to steal from white people??

Tater I was talking about property theft. I had now control over what the Canadian government did one hundred plus years ago. All Canadian citizens are paying for those mistakes now.

For some reason I knew this would take a turn for the worse, and what is really sad is that the province of Saskatchewan has been one of the more progressive in settling land claims. Regardless of any movement forward there are way to many people who do not want to move forward, those people are on both sides, and that is also sad.

One of the biggest problems with this whole trial will come down to both sides playing the race card, as we have already seen by comment that have been made. I believe we are all responsible in the actions we take as individuals, but it seems that as a society we don't want to live with personal responsibility, and that goes for more than just the people involved in this situation.  
Final thought, you steal from someone bad things can happen, you shoot someone bad things can happen.

I hope this man is innocent. You gotta think how threatened he would of felt. 5 people rolling up on him. I would donate to his go fund me as well has anyone set one up ?

I do know I'm terribly opinionated, but at times I'm also very obsessive about detail and fact, and in this case it means reading as much as I can to form an opinion, I think that the truck they tried to get into on the farm before was a red dodge, and they broke the rifle stock while doing so.

Not a hundred percent sure but if you break into my house or try to steal my property and have a weapon I look at that as aggression. But if you do not see the weapon different deal. The people in that part of Sask for a long time have been robbed stolen from and beaten for a long period of time. The police in North Battleford area are the busiest in Canada. As far as land claims citizens of Canada has paid for that many times over already.

Aren''t we allowed to protect our family/property the way we see fit? Are there degrees of defense we''re all suppose to know and practice?  
 
I don''t care what colour you are but if you are on my property uninvited and thieving to boot, I should have the right to protect myself/property any way possible. You know the risks that accompany the crimes you commit.  
 
I''m sick and tired of useless people repeatedly getting away with the crimes they commit. The law/justice system won''t bring the hammer down on them. The rest of us continue to be sitting ducks at the mercy of whether or not the cops can/will show up.  
 
I bet no one set out that day to kill or be killed but someone did set out to trespass and steal. That set off a sequence of events that didn''t end well for anyone. Stanley didn''t just go out hunting for humans that day.  
 
If you''re out trespassing and thieving, you gotta know the risks! You might get caught and some people will also protect themselves and rightfully so imo.
