Surely it is time for the Canadian government to purchase F-35s and contribute our share to NATO as many countries are now doing. The debate on this issue has gone on for long enough. Forget about the Gripen fighter jet. With the present state of uncertainty due to Russian aggression, we need to do more than listen to platitudes from Trudeau. It's time to put on big boy pants.

There has been a procurement process underway since late 2016 when the government decided it needed to step back and run a fair and transparent procurement process, instead of just sole-sourcing the F-35. Contract award is scheduled for 2022. There are only two qualified bidders, as follows, which are offering the Gripen and F-35 respectively:  
 
Swedish Government—SAAB AB (publ)—Aeronautics with Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG, MBDA UK Ltd., and RAFAEL Advanced Defence Systems Ltd., and  
 
 
United States Government—Lockheed Martin Corporation (Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company) with Pratt and Whitney.

When a government can't even commit to buying something as simple as a hand gun for its forces how can we expect to buy complex items like fighter jets, helicopters and navy ships.  
 
It can't even all be blamed on the current liberal party, conservative parties have failed just as spectacularly, it seems the acquisition of anything from underwear to aircraft in bulk is a near herculean task for a sitting Canadian government.  
 
The most recent ship contract and all the "specific canadian requirements" is a perfect example of why we fail to buy whats needed, everything has to be customized and then must be made here even if we're not setup to make it, and quebec always has to get its fair share of the project.

More defence spending means us all paying higher taxes and receiving fewer and poorer services. As a country Canada really can’t afford increased defence spending.  
It would be more prudent to try continue to de-escalate tension, support Ukraine as best we can and give more time for sanctions to bite. Unfortunately as all this goes on Ukrainians continue to suffer at the hands of Russia.

Will find a way to spend it without it costing the tax payer anything. Remember he’s only willing to push Canada to a 10 billion dollar deficit. There isn’t actually a value to money going out if you’re the government. It’s UNLIMITED!!

That makes no sense at all. Ultimately the tax paying public pays for all government spending. Either way it is far more important to work hard towards a peaceful resolution and avoid further escalating the conflict . All of our futures may depend on it.

I think he was taking a sarcastic dig at the liberals lack of fiscal restraint.  
 
Although Trudeau has doubled the national debt in the last 6 six years ... what's another cool 10 billion.... Wouldn't be the worst billion he's spent considering recent global events.

Is printing money to pay the interest on canadas debt. In the last 6 months his spending is out of control. Our taxes will have to increase to pay down the debt. He is with the WEF, everyone should educate themselves about the 4th lndustial revolution. He also admires China's dictership. Trudeau never answers a question, just skirts around it. He gave the main news media a wack of money, we have no bias media about our government now. Hes been involved with so many scandals and has been caught in so many lies. Please go to you tube and look up all that Trudeau has done to embarass us all. He needs to go.

Time for a change. Big question: who will replace him. Our biggest problem is that there is no clear, electable alternative. Given the issues raised, I don't think most would be any happier with the two parties on the left (NDP and Green), and the Conservatives are outdoing themselves each week trying to find more ways to make themselves unappealing to the MAJORITY of Canadian voters. I'm not agreeing to replacing what we have with an unknown that could be worse, just in a different way.
