Those Sneaky Cops!

Does it really matter that the police use "underhanded tactics" to catch criminals? We expect the police to protect and serve, to keep us safe. So, when the police use undercover agents to find the drug dealers, or use covert operations to capture murderers such as Michael Bridges, is it wrong? The RCMPolice in BC are being harangued for using underhanded tactics to finally bring about murder charges against Robert Pickton.
People act offended at the police using 'underhanded' methods to capture these criminals, and yet if it were their loved ones involved, their loved ones who were the victims, they would applaud the efforts. Are these efforts so different from the cops hiding behind signs or bushes to catch speeders? How much is too much?
