from this thread, but I can share some insight on this topic.
As a member of the MMF, I have been asked on many occasion to vote for "so and so" and over the years, whether it was a Provincial or Federal election...and believe it or not, even in a Municipal election, our elected leaders have asked us to vote for candidates that were probably considered to be the "most favored" for our initiatives as an organization. I must remind everyone who reads this, First Nations/Metis and Inuit organizations are very political.
I have heard our leaders at least express the "interest" or proxy us as members to vote for each party through the years depending on who's saying what and when.
My caution is to other aboriginal people, we are born into the realm of politics on so many levels as it is, to make YOUR own choices and vote for what you believe in is best for you and your families. This year the "message" seems to be PC's...last election it was the Liberals...prior it is the NDP's...look closer at these parties my friends, we have aboriginal people as members and elected leaders in ALL the parties...so is there really one party that is going to favor, or work for us as a people, better than the other...in my opinion, no.
Sorry to get off topic on Mike waddels thread, but I had read this posting and like I always am when it comes to our elections as Canadian's feel very weary, when our Elected Aboriginal Leaders start "telling us" who to vote for...it's your right, feel free to express it however you feel....don't let the layer's of politics we already have to sift through cloud your own opinions or feelings...be true to yourself. Thats all I have to say about that...
My Response.....
My fear is a small group of "officals" lean masses to vote the way the group wants.
I guess its all fair in love and war,but doesn't seem fair if the "throw away votes" (a person not wanting to make a decision)are being used as proxys votes.
I'm the first to admit I haven't got grip on the politial ins and outs. Does this mean (as an example)a party leader can go into some of the nursing homes and get their proxy votes to ensure a heavier weighting?
