OTTAWA — The Liberal government, elected on platform that pledged to ban partisan advertising, is set to launch a $500,000 digital ad campaign to boost public support for its plan to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year, according to a strategic plan document obtained by the National Post.  
The government will spend a further $130,000 to monitor the effectiveness of the campaign on public opinion.  
 
This was a 25,000 refugees before Christmas for a 100 million dollar election promise. I wonder if 900 million wasted dollars could have saved 50,000 Syrians lives over the rest of the year.

wonder why the Liberals set the end of the year for getting 25,000 refugees here? For many people, it's the time frame that's the big issue. If it was 25,000 by next July, it would be a different story.

1.2 BILLION dollars in September would have been enough to bring 60,000 refugee families to Canada in one year.  
 
That's 240,000 Syrians escaping the violence...  
 
Our great Liberals are willing to give 25,000 Syrians an early CHRISTmas gift .... And they are going to spend 625,000 in a digital ad campaign to convince us and the world that this 25,000 refugee election promise is smarter than saving 240,000 lives.

Their peaceful demonstration was met with violence from Assad.  
 
The conflict then attracted more dissidents to the cause and it took off

The region got screwed up with geographic boundaries set in place by England

your Harper government spent nearly 750 MILLION dollars on highly partisan ads mostly patting Harper on the back and you have an extreme outrage to this government informing Canadians about the plan for refugees????  
 
Let's compare again:  
$750 Million by the cons and you are ok with that, keeping silent and wanting to re-elect them.  
 
$500,000. by the Liberal government for non-partisan ads about the refugee process and you are outraged???  

Who says that this person does not exist in Canada already? We have so many immigrants already in Canada, whose to say that out of all those already here, only takes 1 to turn terrorist. We can only hope that the people that are chosen to come to Canada, will embrace the True North Strong and Free!! Born, raised and Love Our Home and Native Land!! Will not live in fear for another human being! Raise my children in the most happiest, content way and teach them to be strong for themselves and our country! It's time to worry about Canadian Generation!!!!! Our seniors who can't get help from food banks because they can't walk there, adults who take money from the government to use in self deteriorating ways rather than on their children! By wasting over 900 million dollars instead of using it to support the 4 million refugees in Europe, Canadians will indirectly be responcable for letting thousands and thousands of refugees die.  
 
900 million dollars over one year using the camp death rates is 48,000 dead Syrians. Merry Christmas Canada

After the events of High River, many people, including myself, do not trust the rcmp in anything they are involved in.

You don't trust the RCMP and have no faith in the Liberal government, for the actions of a few officers to secure unattended weapons at the time that the Conservatives were in government.  
 
These logical gymnastics seem all too common among those who oppose helping refugees.  
 
I am not a fan of all RCMP actions, but I do trust them to act in a reasonable manner, in support of CSIS, when screening potential refugees for entry into Canada. Neither the RCMP nor CSIS would want to have potential terrorists in the country. They will be diligent.  
 
ISIS wants citizens in the west to fear and hate Muslims. This plays perfectly into their plans. Why would people want to support those plans ? It makes no sense.

I didn't realize that we had our troops fighting wars in the refugee camps.  
 
I believe rescuing 25,000 Syrians is admirable, I think doing it at any cost (10 times the cost) is going to waste over 900 million dollars.  
 
FYI! The worlds total donation to Turkey to help it keep Syrian refugees fed is just under 500 million dollars.  
 
As for disrespect to the military, I will ask my son what he thinks of my disrespect next time/if he calls home again..  
 
You appear to be against changing the Dec 31 date.  
Read all my posts: if we can lower the price per person by taking 3 months and this results in 50000 refugees, would that work for you.  
 
If Canada takes some refugees every month for a year, maybe the number will be closer to 200000 refugees brought to Canada for the same 1.2 BILLION dollars.

I think Darryl Wolski hit the nail on the head here. The time frame is a primary concern of mine. To process 25,000 people is such a short period is expecting a lot from a bureaucracy that is not used to moving with this type of speed and with such a massive task.  
This is not simply passing someone through security. If we are accepting people as future Canadians, are we not also making a lifelong commitment to their health and welfare, including all of the program we currently have? If so, I would feel better taking an extra month or two to make sure we get it right.

I have to agree.  
I also encourage people to support the refugees left in the camps through a trusted charity like the Red Cross.  
 

If this process needs to be slowed down by two or three months in order for CSIS and the RCMP to be as thorough in their work as THEY deem necessary, I am in complete support. I also believe that the refugees would be tolerant of a brief delay if that means, ultimately, that they will be able to settle in a country like Canada.  
 
I am encouraged that there has been somewhat of an evolution in the positions of some of those posting on here.

Well they are the military...think they get 5 star accommodations while fighting the fires, floods, while they're out in the field? Sorry you have to temporarily move into different accommodations to help people in need. They're still getting paid. They're still getting somewhere to live. Christmas leave is coming up too so those on courses would be returning home mid December for 3 weeks paid leave anyways.  
 
No political advisors are checking Ebrandon for feedback so what's the point in getting so worked up on here?

Wow!! You sure sound bitter towards the military. Most of them pay rent. They are tennants and have rights as tennants. They are renting from DND, regardless of whether they are military or not, they still have rights. How would you feel if you had to vacate your apartment in 3 days? Military bases have Drill Halls and cots. That's where therefugees should be staying.  
 
Canada can't even care of it's own poor homeless people who most have paid taxes, but turn around and cares for others.  
 
Canada should take care of CANADIANS first. The military have rights, like all other CANADIANS!

Wow, so much backlash in the comments section of this story about military kicked out to make way for refugees. Like one poster said, Trudeau in a month has managed to divide Canadians like never before.

I'm confused when Canada cries "where's the military" and calls them back from summer vacations across Canada to sleep on concrete on route to fight fires. No ones outraged about that because we're helping Canada. It's part of the job, right?  
 
But when some military members have to move to a different building and maybe work a few days over Christmas to help victims fleeing terror were outraged? It's national news?  
 
Victims are victims. Lets help.

Not sure really if it's Trudeau that's causing the division in Canadians as much as events in the last little while, there was concern about the refugees but since the attack in Paris the story has become a thing of interest to nearly everyone, didn't see much concern until that point, since then fear seems to be making everyone take notice.  
 
As for the military, it doesn't bother me if just the soldiers had to give up their living accommodations, but it's also the families of soldiers that will be affected. Not sure what the rights are as far as the families are concerned, if your spouse is military does the family have to live by military rules.

In a way this is like other things that governments do, like our provincial tax  
Increase, we can all complain and b*tch but that's not going to change anything at this point, and we'll have to live with it, four years from now if it's affected the country in a negative way we'll get to have our say.
