if a party does not put up the sale of a crown corporation as an election issue, so the voters can make an informed decision.  
 
the only way a crown corporation should be sold is after a provincial referendum.  
 
that referendum should be a solid majority. at least 75% so we know the majority agree.  
 
none of that happened before the sale of MTS and I will always view it as bein illegal.

The PCs sold MTS years ago when they said that they wouldn't, and Pallister was finance minister at that time. Yes, it was a shady deal at best.  
 
The speNDP raised the PST when they said that they wouldn't. The way that they did it was also shady.  
 
Yes, I realize that it is easy to lower the PST, and you can't easily buy back MTS. Both parties have lied to us. Neither party can be trusted.  
 
The speNDP (and others) should get over what the PCs did 17 or more years ago as it is not current or relevant now. (Analogy - if you and your significant other have a fight and they bring up something that you did 17 years ago, is that fair to bring it up now?)  
 
Is Pallister going to sell a crown corporation now? I have no idea. (Analogy - if your sibling commits a crime, does that mean that you are going to also commit a crime?)  
 
The speNDP have nothing current to use against the PCs, and they also have nothing to offer now, so they are fear mongering the PCs from the past.  
 
The party that wins this election should make this province fiscally responsible I would love to see the speNDP get re elected to clean up their own mess. However, we (should) all know that this is NOT going to happen.  
 
I know that I will not be voting speNDP. I'm unsure of who I will vote for otherwise. Declining my ballot is a very real possibility.

the fact that we have to go back 17 years to remind voters of what the last conservative government did, says more about how fed up Manitoba voters were with them.  
 
I have seen many posts in this thread referring to the current government as the "speNDP". I think we can be a little more civil than that.  
 
after all as much as the name may fit I have refrained from calling them "CONservatives".  
 
I would like to see more fiscal responsibility from all governments. but that does not include cutbacks, that Mr. Pallister refuses to tell us how he is going to pay for.

i never realized things were so bad in Manitoba. you'd think it was Mad Max out here the way some people are talking. maybe tone down the drama a little bit?  
 
i mean don't we have one of the, and according to some sources the single, lowest unemployment rate(s) in the country? isn't our economic growth project to be in the top 2/3 of provinces over the next couple years?  
 
i understand the deficit makes people uncomfortable, but government deficits and debt are not simple, black/white issues as so many people believe, and so many conservative politicians try to frame them.

Recent elections are a good reason to not believe what polling companies are indicating. Just a few weeks before the election Christy Clark’s Liberals were written off for dead in the 2013 B.C. election, however her party ended up with a majority government after the election. The Liberal upset was the second recent Western Canadian election to stump the pollsters. Alberta's governing Conservatives pulled off a similar comeback in April 2012, when all predictions called for their defeat.  
 
According to the Brandon Sun this morning Pallister is easing himself into the Premiers chair. This is obvious when he can't stick around for an evening debate so the ordinary people can hear what he has to say. So the ordinary people may give him a surprise.  
 
Brandon Sun says the only question is who will form the official opposition. Well the PC's have a good chance and it will be due in no small part to Pallisters arrogance.

I'm hearing a lot of people talking about their own finances and saying they cannot bear more tax increases. People that pull in more than 50 grand a year.  
 
Some of you are saying "what's the big deal about a little tax increase", well it's a big deal to plenty!  
 
If Selinger gets back in he will have no problem what so ever to raise the PST again! This win for the NDP will be a endorsement to tax (more) and spend!

i watched the debate , and wonder how important it was , 120 people thought it important enough to attend that is probably a fraction of 1% or the people voting here. i felt mz bokhari was the most credible of the 2 ,willing to take responsibility for her and her parties foibles. mr selinger seems to believe in a double standard with regard to the foibles of ndp members and non members.

Sorry I don't agree with your continual fear mongering about the PST being raised When the NDP are re-elected. Also yes I agree with others that I haven't really felt a drop in income from a 1% PST increase.  
 
If we needed the increase to provide necessary services then great, I don't like driving on pot holed filled roads.  
 
When your pal Pallister reduces the PST how are we going to fix the roads and don't tell me he will find areas to cut to make up for the lost revenue. While I agree ambulance charges are ridiculous as you have complained about in the past where is the money coming from when the PST is rolled back.

Mr. Selinger promised to cost share building roads for Brandon 50/50, just like Winnipeg. How long has the cost been shared with 50/50 with the province and Wpg.?

All the post refer to the Pc govt 17 years ago.The mess we are in with health care,education and balloning deficit is the current govt fault. The roads are the result of the Ndp govt not looking outside the perimeter. As far as privatising hydro, its not going to happen because the Ndp have drained it coffers dry. Our once proud hydro has been reduced a mere shadow of itself by Ndp interference(bipole 111).

I don't believe the constant fear mongering about Hydro being sold. I was at Caldwell's HQ last election and numerous people were echoing the same old, the Cons will sell Hydro.  
 
I am tired of the fear mongering about Filmon, years and years in the past. Let's leave the past in the past!  
 
I am looking for better fiscal management of the dollars the province already has.  
 
Doesn't look like the NDP is saying we are taxed too much.

Can you provide a link or at least point me in the right direction where Pallister stated where he was making cuts because I have never read anything like that.  
 
There was a document leaked about the PST when it was raised and the NDP were contemplating 9%. But you would still probably say it wouldn't affect your pocket book.

Yep that's right promise kept now under the ndp people can't get into the hallways for basic life saving care. How many have died in waiting rooms over the last 2 years 5 or so I believe and what about those that were sent home in a taxi from emergency only to die on there front steps. Yeah we need another 4 or 5 years of ndp because they care

I had posted in the federal election thread what the problems are with majority governments.  
 
it seems that voters get so fed up with a current government, that they rebel and give the opposition majorities for the next few elections.  
 
what happens then is we get the extreme policies of the party because they cannot be stopped with a solid majority.  
 
the best outcome in ANY election is a minority government.  
 
that way every bill is a potential non-confidence vote and we get more middle of the road bills enacted.  
 
very bad for politicians and their ability to pay back the party faithful.....  
 
but very good for the rest of us.

What's your solution? Privatize health care like the U.S.? Or just cutback on nurses.  
 
The population is aging go up to the hospital or go to any clinic and see how many people are going through the system everyday. I find it unbelievable that there is money to pay for the use I see being made of the health care system.  
 
Give us an idea how you will fix the system besides rolling back the PST.

Do we need to fire nurses not likely. But it costs 700 to 1000 dollars a day to provide services in brandon and Winnipeg it costs about 450 dollars a day to provide services in rural manitoba but the ndp underutilize rural facilities. Then the cities claim they need more because their facilities are full of rural patients. When was the last time the ndp expanded senior care facilities in rural manitoba where costs could be controlled. But it's still Gary filmons fault 17 years later

The MB NDP sold the land registry office to a firm in Ontario. Doesn't seem to be an issue that they sold off a crown corp and the public was not consulted. Maybe it doesn't seem like a big deal except that between that sale and the NDP doubling the land transfer tax it will cost approx $4,000 to change the title on a $250,000 home

you are not really trying to equate that to a telecom company that served the whole province are you?

Not only am I an infidel atheist, but I guess I'm a dirty union member too. Sorry, Brian, but "right to work" laws are anything but. States in the US that have these laws have some of the lowest wages and highest poverty rates in North America.

Why did Filmon make cuts in health care all those years ago?  
 
Maybe it had something to do with Jean Chretien's Liberal federal government decreasing health care transfer payments?  
 
The proposed increase for higher tax rate for the wealthiest by the NDP is wrong IMO.  
 
How many doctors would want to come and practice in Manitoba if this goes thru? The wealthy already pay more in taxes why should the NDP play Robin Hood? Steal from the rich to give to the poor?  
 
We have some amazing doctors, I hope that they will want to stay in Brandon if the NDP get back in.  
 

Why would the Ndp oppose a free vote when it comes to union. A free vote with a secret ballot is what democracy stands for. Perhaps the Democrat in the Ndp name doesnt apply. All jobs should be open to all workers not just unionized workers.

It's not that they are against a free vote. Currently if over 65% of the employees sign a union card, the labor board will automatically certify them. If it's between 40 to 65% the labor board will conduct a vote. The conservative's want to change it so that a vote will be required no matter what, this usually allows the company's time to scare employees to change there minds.

Can't believe I'm saying it, but actually some of Pallister's ideas are not bad.  
Just wish he'd say how he plans to pay for his promises......

Some of the political observers are saying that Brandon East is one of the seats to watch.  
Any opinions on whether Mr. Caldwell will hang onto his job?

the point is the mts sale was for market value,a poorly run company with outdated technology in a market becoming deregulated to some extent. the land registry was at fire sale prices and it also served the whole province

Three votes in this household voted Conservative for the first time.  
 
All of us have voted in every election and have voted NDP provincially every single time but now it`s TIME FOR A CHANGE!

Let's also remember that the sale of MTS led to additional wealth for the former premier and some of his cronies after being appointed to the board of directors.  
 
Filmon promised he wouldn't sell MTS. Then, after the election, he said he would sell but that no jobs would be lost, rates would not increase and service would improve. After the sale jobs were lost, rates increased and service declined.  
 
Many of the people who sound apoplectic at Selinger's broken promise seem quite content with Filmon's. Maybe that is because someone became rich(er), which makes it okay ?

Pallister has stated how he would pay for his plans. The papers have printed this information. Do you subscribe to the Brandon Sun? I'm sure you could find what you need to in the paper.  
 
At this point I am more concerned with the promises of spending money from both the NDP and the Liberals.  
 
After all these years what if anything did the NDP cut? This is why the province is having to raise the taxes every year.  
 
Nothing wrong with watching the dollars you have now and spending wisely is there? I mean that's what we have to do with our own households!  
 
Back a few years ago our city decided to toss the self proclaimed "tax and spend socialist" we had as a mayor and elect a mayor who would better serve this community.

Here is something from the editorial in today's Brandon Sun: "None of the three parties has offered a longterm view, at least not one that is backed up with a financial road map, integrated with spending promises."  
 
None of the three parties. None of them. That includes Pallister and the PC's. Don't let your newfound blind allegiance shape your thinking.  
 
The editorial also said "Mr. Pallister’s prescription for the future was just two pages long, and it looks like it could have been scribbled on a napkin on the kitchen table."  
 
Hardly a comprehensive plan.  
 
I am concerned that Pallister's "managers" are working so hard to keep him away from unscripted moments, like the debate in Brandon. Are they so afraid of him speaking off-script that they limit his appearances ? If his minders are that concerned about his judgement, maybe the voters should be similarly concerned.
