Short sighted and suffering from a short memory.

My first impression of the Manitoba Party is that they appear to be somewhere between the NDP and the Liberals politically. I haven't considered them as a serious contender, so I'm not paying much attention to them, yet anyway. They may become a viable option someday. I can't see myself voting for them though. I could see myself voting for the Saskatchewan Party if I lived there. As far as declining a ballot, yeah it's an option, but I would rather see a choice where people could vote "None Of The Above" on the ballot.

Should take a closer look at the party platform it is more a conservative/liberal hybrid - as one of the candidates I'm more in the conservative camp than any other - my basic political leaning is Libertarian/centrist - we have 20 candidates registered and another 15 + being vetted and hopefully will have the necessary signatures in place to join us - with 35 candidates we will make a good option for those not satisfied with the establishment party's - watch for our announcement on Wed March 23

If the spendp get back in they will need to raise sales tax to pay off all promises they have made. They will have to reward the unions for advertising for them and usual fat pay increases will be made. Private companies will be taxed to reward govt and union employees who will vote them in.

If PC's get in the garages will be busy doing front end repairs as Pallister will roll back the PST and forget about filling pot holes in our roads. Auto insurance will have to rise to pay for all the repairs though.  
 
Also we wont have to complain about school taxes as he will not build new schools and waste money on baby sitting (full time Kindergarten.

If the worst happens and the NDP get back in we can forget a lowering of the PST. It will be like an endorsement of the party's raising the taxes as high as they want. And they will, they have no shortage of ideas to spend money!  
 

Interesting thread although there is a lot of people just venting. It doesn't matter what party is in power there will be complaining. Looking at Manitoba's unemployment rate and job creation, it is not that bad compared to the rest of the country. Can we do better, there is always room for improvement. Conservatives will cut to find a balanced budget while the NDP traditionally spend and create deficits. The Liberals have made promises with no clear direction on how to pay for it. Cuts lead to reduced services and unemployment while increasing services too quickly lead to deficits. The right approach is finding the balance but some people would still complain. Whatever services or infrastructure you are looking for, it all costs money, and to stay stagnate is not good either, that's when the catch up hurts.. The NDP wisely use the population base of Winnipeg while the Tories use rural Manitoba for theirs and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the math. Sometimes change is good but sometimes one has to be careful for what you ask!

The NDP did sell off the Property Registry-a monopoly. As far as I can tell the $75 million they got for that sale disappeared very quickly but on the bright side they do get royalty payments every year . Fee increases? From what I have heard all fee increases are mandated by the government, not the private owner company, so yes, blame the NDP for those increases.  
 
I most certainly will not be voting NDP in this election.  
 
People seemed to like Gary Doer as Premier. From what I see, Sellinger rode in on Doer's coattails and now doesn't know when it's time for him to get out. He overstayed his welcome long ago. If he had stepped down before his party revolt perhaps the party-and this province-would be in better shape now.  
 

Previous posting says the roads,schools and hospitals will suffer if Ndp is turfed. How could the roads be any worse than they are under this govt. Schools and hospitals under disrepair. The Spendp have had their go at it and failed, let someone else try and make it right.

That was then this is now . Those claims are false. We need a government that will get spending under control.

I sometimes think we forget how governments work, there are the elected parties that sort of administer things but there are departments which formulate and carry out things that need to be done. Has Brandon received any good things, that were needed, under this government. There were major improvements made at the hospital when it came to cancer treatment, there are new bridges over the river on 18th street, and even out in our area the managed to fix #21 between #2and #1. There were numerous bridges repaired because of the two flooding events, and even with all those things I have my doubts that anyone, including myself, would vote NDP.  
 
I guess what bothers me most is very few political parties want to focus on what we need and seem to spend ever increasing amounts of money on wants. The present government has spent more money on these want items than I think any other government has, and even in areas of needs has not spent wisely, education is the first thing that comes to mind.  
 
The world does change and needs of society do change as well, but it would be nice if political parties would try and to prioritize thing better, you do see it being done within government departments, or maybe some government departments, but it would be nice if those running for office would address the needs of our province and not the wants.

City streets are the responsibility of the municipal government, not provincial.  
 
Auto insurance will rise regardless. The SpeNDP love milking the coffers of crown corporations.

The highways leading to Souris are in pretty good shape now. However after many years of Filmon's PC's PTH 10 and PR 250 were in pretty bad shape. So yes you can enjoy your trips home.

Imagine if the Liberal deficit which is 300% of what they promised is combined with a Spend spending spree. Can we say, borrow ourselves into a profit. We need a govt with some kind of control over spending. None of the Ndp hopefulls know how to make a budget and stick to it.

I was in Calgary when the Conservatives privatized that province's hydro. My monthly bill went from around $90.00 to over $170.00 within a year.

Are you certain that the PCs will do any better? I haven't seen much fun them indicating that the budgets will be any better. Last I heard, they said they would reduce the PST but not rule out raising other taxes to compensate.  
 
I guess getting $10 billion or so for Hydro would be an easy way to balance the books if needed.

Our current deficit is plain stupid. The debt though is not out of whack as of yet. A few Provinces are far worse.  
 
What irks me is spending plans do not address the debt load. The only party so far that seems to notice costing out and stuff is the Liberals.  
 
Trudeau Junior ran on promising a deficit. Fine by me he won and need to watch and listen. That is democracy.  
 
This is a provincial election and as such Provincial issues are front and centre. As such I really do not like the three parties platforms much.  
 
I for the first time will look local. It is to the point I am so peeved at politicians at any level. Yet I need a voice and I always vote.

There are many highways that are still riddled with potholes. Trust me, I rode a lot of them on my motorcycle. The NDP are/were no better than any other government at repairing and replacing - except their "budget" always manages/managed to go WAY over projected. Think of 18th St bridges....

Well that's the way it goes when politics are involved. Rural south west Manitoba has always voted PC... the way their forefathers did. However when the Filmon PC's were in they did not build any highways in SW Manitoba either, so how do you expect the NDP to fix the mess that Filmon and crew left behind?  
 
CeeJay says that the NDP is always over budget when building highways and bridges but that is a fact of life when you have private companies always wanting to pad the bill when the taxpayers are paying.  
 
The only difference if the PC's should get elected is this may not happen as they will be so fixated on cutting the deficit that they wont do any highway improvements and we will once again be set back 20 years with our highway system.  
 
The over budget Winnipeg City police building is just a good example of this gouging and misappropriation of funds that goes on.

The Ndp has been using politics to run our once proud hydro Corp. Bipole 111 is the worst engineering mistake in the history of Manitoba. The cost of this political farce will haunt Manitobans for decades. Good Manitoba farmland destroyed to avoid building thru rocks and stones. The line would actually help wildlife and could be used for access to northern towns,but that would make too much sense. Manitoba is a good crown Corp being dragged down by political interference,our hydro bills will skyrocket unless the Ndp take their hand out of the Hydro cookies jar.

I'm not endorsing or voting for the NDP (or the PC), but we mustn't forget that the Filmon PCs slashed essential front line services.

Seriously, the SpeNDP has been in power in Manitoba a lot more than the Cons since the 60s but the SpeNDP faithful STILL blame Filmon for all the provinces woes.... too funny.

The Cons cut spending to make up for the spending spree of the SpeNDP. The Cons were trying to be fiscally responsible, but became the bad guys for doing what was right and prudent.  
 
If your significant other goes on a spending spree, you're going to have to cut back to make ends meet. That is what the Cons were doing.

If your spouse needs a life saving surgery, you go into debt to pay for it. Filmon cut nurses and teachers and yet payed his staff not to show up to work on Fridays. Your analogy doesn't account for the seriousness of government.  
 
I'm not saying that Pallister is Filmon, but they're running a cuts campaign.

My father was a Dr here in Brandon when the SpeNDP came into power. I recall him and the other Drs going on strike against the government due to their poor treatment by the SpeNDP.  
 
Yeah, so let's live in the past rather than LOOK at what the CURRENT fiscally irresponsible government is doing.

Um, no that’s not what I am saying. What I am saying is that Filmon and Pallister put the province so far behind that the NDP had to start spending or you would be driving your motor bike on gravel roads to Souris.  
 
During the 1988-96 years the only major spending on roads by the PC’s in SW Manitoba was the upgrading of Front Street in Melita. The NDP had started 4 laning PTH1 to the Sask. Border west of Virden before Filmon got in only to have Filmon cansel the project. So 6 miles of road eventually grew up in weeds. In the end that little stretch of road increased quite a bit more than if it had been completed when grading was done. Guess who had to finish the job, not the Cons.  
 
The NDP in the last 15 years have virtually rebuilt PTH 10 from Brandon to the U.S. border.  
 
The NDP completed twinning of PTH 1 to the Sask. Border. PR 250 to Souris, PTH 21 south of PTH1 to PTH 2 etc. I could go on and on. But where were your PC’s when they were in power? Well they were busy cutting government services and selling off MTS.  
 
Unplanned for Floods and relocating First Nations communities have cost millions. So it comes as no surprise that the NDP had to find money to pay for these floods and that would seem obvious as to why the PST would increase 1%. Why is Pallister going to not roll back that PST for 4 years? Could he maybe have figured it out that he will need the money.
